Proggy Grunge

Post by JD01 »

OK, been working on this on and off for the last 3 weekends and I was getting pissed off with it, but I think I made a breakthrough with it today.

Pre-vocal mix at this stage - not sure what direction this is going to take yet, but I'd be interested to hear what you think of the mix so far.

Finally got 5 mins to work on this and managed to de-click the kick :)

Pretty good overall to me on first listen. Kick is a little thin for my taste. Right channel guitar is a bit harsh(when distorted) for me in some areas.

That clicky/Milo tin kick drains power from the drums.
Other than that it's coming along very nicely.

Cheers Guys, the clicky kick is something that comes up again and again so I obviously need to look at it.

Tony, the guitar on the right.. I think I know the bit you mean - its quite aggressively played and has a fair bit of chorus on it.

Firstly the song is fucking awesome JD!!! I'd listen to this shit out of this. It has that melodic punk vibe that gives me chubbys. A lot of the composition and music arrangement has an air of that Gainesville sound. It's a long as song too. Might be a little long for my attention span.

On my monitors here and i don't really have anything other than i think the snare is really dominating the whole thing and the kick is maybe a bit to buried behind it?

I have given it a few listens, and I know it isn't there but it really sounds like you hit a note on a xylophone around the 1:30-1:31 mark on the leftish. Cool. Is that your tele on the left? It is sort of all over this mix. it definitely isn't a bad thing. Really kind of cool.

Cheers WJ, I'll have a listen our for what you've said.

Glad you like it though. I'm generally pretty happy with this one. Dunno what it's gonna be about yet.

One cool thing about this tune that might interest people (mainly Mutt) is that I use nearly every configuration of the pickups on my custom. Neck and bridge, both humbucker and split. I think I even use both pickups on one of the guitars in the interlude

The xylophone sound you're hearing is a slight crunch tone on the split neck pickup of my custom - I use pretty much every available pickup configuration of my custom in this song.

Overall thought it sounded very good.

In the intro, the crunch rhythm guitars kind of get lost in the mix and they don't seem to have much definition. The bass and lead guitar kind of dominate it. After the intro, things sort out. The crunch guitars seem to have more definition.

Drums sound great.

Aside from the intro, I thought everything sounded excellent.

Sounds pretty cool James - there's still too much Milo lid in the kick for my taste but I'm old & I like Milo.

Cheers, hopefully I'll get to put some time into this this weekend. I've still not got a single lyrical idea for it.

This is sounding pretty great now, James. It really does need the vocal now to make sense of the changes and give the song an identity, because otherwise it's just a very lengthy song with loads of good riffs, ideas and playing.

I would ease off the attack on the kick drum as Ray says, though. One way of doing that is if you're compressing it, use a fast attack and release - this will help to tone down the clickiness.

Cheers, mate. I've got some vocal melody ideas. Just no lyrical themes/hooks yet. I want this to end up quite abstract lyrically.

Seconded!

No nits; curious to hear what melody goes along w/the changes.
awesome youtube comment of the day
Bill and Ted time traveled and brought a bass player from 1973, a drummer from 1984 and a guitar player from 1995. Now they're spreading peace all over the world 🌎

I'm liking this JD, finally got around to giving it a listen after your heads up and there isnt much about it that I dont like.. :like:

Do me some keeper tracks before you mess with it any more and I look forward to hearing it with vocal and whatever mix down you give it...

What sort of things do you want? Shall I just pull some highlights out of the mix and remove all the verb and stuff?
