Song for dying dad

Bob & Sons - You Ain't Going.mp3
So I got a call from a dying mans son whos father (Bob) was in hospice care, dying. The son, ben and his two brothers wanted to come in to my studio and record a few songs that their dad used to play for them when they were lil boys. Two of them came in to lay bed tracks (drums and dummy acoustic guitar and lead vocal) on this Bob Dylan song. They admittingly were not musicians at all! They wanted to do this to play for Bob before he passed away. Thing is, they only recorded the two tracks. The vocal acoustic track were recorded with one mic because after all it was supposed to be a dummy track for them to build on etc. Ben, on drums counted it in REALLY fast and they kind of crashed in to the song. (you'll hear it as the song starts) I of course cut out the very fast 123(song starts immediately, singing and all) I learned to love the song and the sentiments of these sons who were loosing their dad within days.

...after they left I took some liberty and added a bass track, backing vox, and other guitars. I emailed them the mp3 hours after they left my place and this is the version they played for Bob later that afternoon. What a group of good guys they were. Not to be swishy, but it was rather heart warming to see sons do this for their dad in the circumstance they as a family were in.

I hope Bob liked it. He raised good boys.

The situation that this song finds itself in voids itself of any need of critiques from me. All the peices sound pretty good to me and that purpose is served. Pretty cool AM. Good on all of you for that.

I am glad you explain the beginning i did notice right away it just sort of was going.

Those dudes have balls. If my dad was dying I don't know if I could get it together to do song for him. Kudos to them.

Thanks gentlemen, big time. As far as mixing and a few little things that I would have done differently. I plugged the bass directly into my console, not a habit of mine but it's a low impact song and it gets the job done (ish) A bit of a reverb on the lead vocal (the dummy track) that now wish I would have backed off of, and the snare is a little bottom heavy on some listening platforms but all n' all I'm happy. I've deleted the data so it is a wrap no matter what. Alas......

Yep. No point in nit-picking something like that.

Good on ya.
