Deserve No Better - Redo
Deserve No Better - Redo
Gents,
This is an old song of mine (people Like Greg, Ray and Bubba will be fucking sick of this), but I've redone the whole thing. New bassline, retracked guitars, new amp, new vocals - much easier to record in a dead room!
Tell me what you think.
Cheers,

Re: Deserve No Better - Redo
I vaguely recall this one I think.
The big thing that's leaping out at me is that some of your vocal attacks are a little clicky. Most notably "could" at 0:23.
Is that a delivery or editing thing? I assume you're cutting off your breaths and other extraneous noise? Are you fading in, or is it a hard cut? If the latter, you're probably getting some horizontal clipping.

Re: Deserve No Better - Redo
No, I'm not cutting anything. It's probably just a click of some description.
Just listened to it again now - its a delivery thing, cock - I'll have to redo that.

Re: Deserve No Better - Redo
This really has lifted with a full renovation.
The vocal is much more confident and gritty/grainer. SH is a bit loud in revoluTIon etc. That could be a de essing job to do.
Great work.

Re: Deserve No Better - Redo
Sounds really big, powerful; nice!
The vocals get lost a bit in the choruses (@1:06, 2:45); I think shaving out a tiny bit of the guitars (or maybe the bass?) somewhere around 2k-5k may help give the vocal more presence.
The 2nd time the opening lick comes in (@1:39) it feels like it's a bit more indistinct than in the intro. It could be simply the contrast of having just come out of the chorus, but my ears want that lead line to stand out a bit more. (EQ? Dropping or turning down accompanying parts in that section? Using automation to ride up the level of the lead as that section begins?)
The vocals entering verse 2 (@2:02-2:03) are too low, and could use a bit of volume automation to make them loud and clear.
Oh, and did you know this guy -->
<-- has close to the same BPM as your tune?
Joking about emoticons aside, this is really good.

awesome youtube comment of the day
Bill and Ted time traveled and brought a bass player from 1973, a drummer from 1984 and a guitar player from 1995. Now they're spreading peace all over the world

Cheers Dan, thats just the sort of thing I need. I hope to put some more time into mixing this in the morning.SweetDan wrote: βSat May 26, 2018 12:33 pm Sounds really big, powerful; nice!

I suppose some of you new guys won't have heard these songs before. The "founding rebels" will be sick to death of hearing proto-versions of these using my Blackstar amp and none of the skills I've learned in the last year.

I've had a good check now - turned the lead guitars down in the chorus - kept the rhythm the same - gave the vocals a bit more pop.
I'm happy with the verse 2 vocal volume - that's a quieter verse.
You're right about the headwall guy! haha

Just gotta decide if I can deal with them hard c pops without re-tracking... I think I probably can't.

Yep,
The Vs in this image are for plosives or overly loud syllables and the other lopsided one is to reduce an esss...

Re: Deserve No Better - Redo
Yeah I noticed the vocal click neat the beginning. The guitars sound great, the track is mixed well generally but the vocals could come up a whisker. The intro noodly guitar is a bit dry. I'd prefer a treatment similar to the end solo for it. Otherwise, good job.

Hey JD, I remember this one too. It would be cool to put up the older version so we can hear the differences in comparing the newly tracked guitar tones vs what you had before, etc. Maybe not necessary just interesting. Sounds like your new room is working out for you already.
Re: Deserve No Better - Redo
Cool - I'm going to do a small remix of this based on the comments so far - I'll try and find the original thread too.einstein magoo wrote: βSun May 27, 2018 12:39 pm Hey JD, I remember this one too. Re: Deserve No Better - Redo
There's no actual singing at 0:23 so you should be able to edit that out, I'd have thought? What ray said re. the V - I do it all the time, sometimes it's even a trench with a bottom, depending upon what noise it is...
Sounds pretty good JD - I echo what the others are saying about the singing - sounds more confident and aggressive than the last version I heard (I do remember it!).
Nice,

Cheers Armistice, here's the new version taking into account the comments so far. Think I've caught all the pops now.Armistice wrote: βSun May 27, 2018 9:26 pmThere's no actual singing at 0:23 so you should be able to edit that out, I'd have thought? Re: Deserve No Better - Redo
Did you re-track that first "could" or just edit it? The click's gone, but the word itself isn't really coming through. (I'm not noticing other clicks on the vox at this point, tho, so nice there.)
A bit of distortion on "stained" around 2:10.

Stained? I think it's strain!
Yeah, I did chop out the click, might need to be more careful with it.
