The Change / Warcry of the Lost - new VHS song with other vocalists

Post by vomitHatSteve »

I've got a brand new song with 4 vocalists and dirty vocals. This is a lot of new area for me mixing-wise so I'd love feedback.

Thank you!

Wow, the music is all sorted and in place, levels are right and the vocals evenly matched.
This one is done.
Cheers

This sounds good straight off, Steve.

Guitar tone - even for you - this might be too lo-fi sounding, it almost just sounds broken

"Now that your life" that singer is a bit loud and harsh sounding - maybe take the top of off.
Its the same when everyone is singing together before the grunty sick sound - I think some of them are a bit loud and grunty sick sound is a bit far forward to me.
The "Peter, Ohhhh-ooo-ohhh" guy is too loud and had too much verb i think.

Basically I think you've mixed yourself really well, but the other guys are too loud and a bit harsh sounding.

Who the fuck is Peter? He got mention in the other song too.

Thanks, JD. Some good feedback there. I gotta get the hang of mixing other voices.

It's a rock opera. Peter's the bad guy. (Constance and Johnny are star-crossed lovers who are constantly reincarnated and die tragically. Peter is the wealthy powerful a-hole who consistently interferes and kills them.)

new mix
Adjusted some vocal EQs and levels.
Turned the guits up a bit and used less side-chain compression on them
Added more low-end to the bass.

Thanks! keep it coming!

Sounds pretty good to me VHS - although I'll admit that I struggle always to find anything useful to say mix-wise to you about your stuff because it's a bit alien, in a good way, to my general listening experience, and I tend to forget the mix and just go for the ride. :lollers: I listened to Mix2 and nothing is jumping out at me via my crappy laptop speaker/beatz sound card environment. :like:

Gotta admit I don't understand this genre. The vocal though is killer throughout. When the vocal stops around :51 for example, there's some good stuff (movement) happening in the middle but it is pretty much washed over by the side guitars? Maybe that's the intent and fine, but I'd kind of like to hear more of the good stuff so I could discern what it is better.

edit: I guess the vocal doesn't really stop there, more around 1:14. There and in the beginning and the end there is something underneath the ruckas that I would like to hear better. Maybe just me.

Thanks, guys.

EM, are you referring to the synths during the breaks? I'm never sure how loud to mix those. Since they're randomized, they're not really a lead part per se. More just a weird rhythm.

Alright, uploading a new mix.

Some more bass. Slightly less guitar.
Probably not gonna mess with the synth levels tho.

New Mix sounds cool - the guitars are almost percussion. The bass sounds great for the song and the other instruments hangs from it.
The vocals are cool the way they are - the demon voice does give me a Pick of Destiny reminder in spots.
Cool

In the office on my office cans now (I was on my reference cans the other day)
The guitars sound better on this, still weird - not quite so broken.
Balance between you and the other singers is much better now.
I think your backing vocal is a bit too quiet in comparison to the 80s sounding guy at the end. If you brought yourself up a bit you could probably bring him down a bit.

As you'd say, you're "circling the drain" on this now, mate.
