Norwegian Turd
About four weeks ago I went to a friend's basement "studio" to dick around with his new recording gear. Neither he nor I have much experience with actually tracking or mixing anything, just getting started. Lot's of excuses here but it's just reality. This thing is clipping all over the place and just a faders -up kind of quick mix. I wanted to do something quick, warts and all. I'm much more of a perfectionist than this shows, but it was one of those things I just wanted to do quick and get out of there.
I have been playing an acoustic version of this for years and wanted to see how it sounded with some electric elements. Really fizzy, I mean super-fizzy guitars (that was really an accident, didn't sound this bad while tracking). I play all the instruments and it's my lead vocal. Everything is one take, start to finish on each element. Started with acoustic rhythm guitar. We played it back, he said "wanna do it again" I said "nope". I just wanted to charge through this thing. Put down an electric lead or melody part followed by a harmony part of the melody. Better mixing could let both parts show more clearly.
Followed these two parts with the little electric figure that finishes the melody in most verses. Then bass ( I had no idea what I was going to do and had never played bass on this, so I just fumbled along). Then bongos. Then tambourine. Then shaker. Then lead vocal. Then he was supposed to do a high harmony part on the chorus but could only hit the octave. He's a really good singer but has trouble with harmony and his goodness does not show up here. I have NO goodness to my voice at all but I don't care. Did I mention that each of these parts were straight through first takes?
Brian has recorded a few things in the past but is just learning. He is coming out of Garage Band and just starting with Logic or something like that for his DAW. He likes to do a section, cut and paste, and piece a song together. I don't like that idea and said we are going to do live performances, front to back, with no shenanigans and see what happens. He may have tried to add some effects while tracking. Maybe a little reverb or something but I cant hear it. Just a bunch of crappy clipping.
It's not like I'm proud of this or anything, and it has not been properly tracked, performed, or mixed. Just a fun four hours in his basement to put together two minutes of experimental tunage. Have a laugh and maybe let me know what you think. Also no click, just stomping threw (up).
I've been hanging around here for quite some time and thought I would show you all I do have some interest in this stuff. Here goes...

Nice! Sounds great, and makes me
(Know what it's missing, though? A sprinkling of that new (old) Hammond you picked up a few months ago.
)

You really know it, though, and I think that comes through in the recording.einstein magoo wrote: ↑Sat May 19, 2018 2:02 pm ...I have been playing an acoustic version of this for years...

awesome youtube comment of the day
Bill and Ted time traveled and brought a bass player from 1973, a drummer from 1984 and a guitar player from 1995. Now they're spreading peace all over the world

Re: Norwegian Turd
I like the fizzy guitars. They don't really match some of the rest of the recording, but I'd prefer you keep them and update everything else. Get some rock drums in there!
Really, besides the mismatched tone of guitar vs. hand drums, it's pretty good. Vocals sound a little demo-y, but you'll get that with one take.

Re: Norwegian Turd
Thanks guys! Appreciate the listen and the comments!
This of course is no keeper so if I decide to mess with it some more I will re-track everything with my own gear at home. If I do this I will take as many passes of each element as necessary to get a cleaner and better performance and takes. This was a one off so not sure if I want to revisit it. It certainly didn't come off exactly as I envisioned in my head.
Dan, I will introduce the Hammond with a gnarly snarling glissando palm smear up to a held chord in the choruses, change to second chord and modulate the leslie slow to fast and back through the chorus. Already planned on doing that if this had come out better. Maybe on next effort.
Steve, what I had in my head was more organic, thus the bongos and shit. You're right that some good hard rocking drums would help carry this, but I just tore down my kit to move to a friends house so that may come later. When we tracked the vocal I couldn't really hear myself in the cans. Dude had everything else blasting and not a good mix to do a vocal over. I had envisioned a little more grit and aggression which is hard to get on a first pass. If I re-track everything, I may send this to rami to add some drumbs. He has offered to do some for me before and he is also a Beatles guy so that may work out.
I think the fizzy guitars sound more like fucking bagpipes lol!
Thanks again for the encouragement. I think this kind of thing shows others not to be afraid to post your crap. You guys are very kind and helpful.

Re: Norwegian Turd
The fizzy fuzz is a nice element to an otherwise tard version. I like your slightly dismissive vocal style.
I look forward to developments.

Thanks Ray! Apreciate the listen. Tard version, i like that...cool!
Re: Norwegian Turd
Einstein, I like this. Sounds like people actually playing - its ideal.
The egg shaker comes in a bit early and then stops just after "Its time for bed" you can probably just chop that out.
The egg shaker is also a touch a loud.
This is good though - I'd leave this pretty much as it is.

Thanks JD! If you read my intro you see that I havent decided whether to take this further but i agree with your advice. Thanks again!
Re: Norwegian Turd
I think it sounds great! A lot of home recordings are not good and if this is just a quick blast of tracking and little mixing its pretty damn good man! Sounds way better than anything I can do and Ive been at this a while(though not totally dedicated haha).

I like it magoo. Performances are tight. like the electric guitar sound, it almost resembles a sitar. Pretty cool for a one take project.
