Head On - The Jesus & Gregory Chain

Post by Greg_L »

Hey, here's a quick cover I knocked out cover the past couple days. Lots of drums banging and amps cranking so my ears are pretty tired. See what you think. robus drums

OOohhh.......A new Greg tune. Awesome. I'm just in between rounds on the bag. I'll listen after my workout and shower.

I had never heard of this so I looked it up. Your version is well recorded but it sounds a little one dimensional compared to the original. Mainly because they double tracked the hell out of everything and used a fair amount of reverb. Nice job though.

Ha thanks. Not to sound like Gonzo, robus but I wasn't trying to recreate the original. I don't think I could even if I wanted to. I just kept the arrangement mostly the same and did it the way I do pretty much everything.

Maybe you should have used an overpriced Mesa Boogie, an attenuator, and a Palmer speaker sim. Keep that in mind for next time.

Excellent. Nice, open sound, no clutter whatsoever. Sounds as pro as can be.

I don't know the original, but I'm sure anything you did differently was deliberate. :D

Hey, you play double bass drum, or are you doing all that with one?

Also, what you got going there, a flanger or a phase shifter in the break? Sounds cool.

Not trying to suck up... :D...but I actually like your version better because it IS dryer and more up front.
The original has way too much ambience and sounds diffused.

Sounds pretty good. Im not familiar with the original artist's version, but it sounds good to me.
But hey, everything you do sounds like the Ramones to me anyway.
What the hell do I know?

He doesn't mean to...it just happens by accident.

:P

Greg could have filled in as a Ramone.

Thanks for the listen Rami. happytrees

Single foot, single bass drum. I do have double pedals but didn't need it for this. I think my favorite part of the drum track is the 18" floor tom. That bad boy rumbles. I was worried that the drums low end would be too much, but I just let it be what it is. Sounds cool to me.

That lead break thing is double tracked, one low, one an octave up, both heavy flangered. The flanger was literally a last second decision. I was tracking like normal and it just hit me - Greg, flanger, now! - so I stomped on it. I haven't used it in so long the knobs were tweaked all over the place from bumps, bruises, cables dragging across it, and general neglect. Sounds cool to me so it stayed. Serendipity. minernuggs

Hey, you know how to totally tickle my sweet spot by saying I sound like the Ramones. lollers

For real though, it aint intentional, it's just all I know. They indirectly taught me how to play. Thanks for the listen and comments. :)

Thanks miro. The Jesus & Mary Chain were pretty well known back in the day for being noisy. Their songs, mixes, everything about them was dense and noisy and layered and crazy. Lots of fuzz and feedback.

Great stuff. You're a much much better drummer than you give yourself credit for. That's some solid galloping bass drum playing you're doing there. I've never ever played double bass or double pedal.

Not too much low end at all. Sounds great. Do you have it panned? It seemed to be more centred than I'd expect from a floor.

Cool. Sounds a bit like a phase shifter.

Thanks dude. Double bass is something I have the pedals for, and never do. Very rarely. To me it can't not sound lame most of the time. And all I can do is straight single stroke 8th or 16th notes anyway. I can't do any real double bass drumming. Nor do I want to. I can't do feet fills or finish patterns on double kicks. Fuck that. I'm not fancy.

It is panned fairly hard right, but I think it seems centered because low end sort of self-centers and it's so loud it's pretty well represented in both overheads. And the reverb probably makes it maybe more centered? I don't know.

That's definitely it. I hear the strikes on the right, but the low end fills out towards centre. If you have a stero reverb on it, or just the room's reverb will spread it even more. Which is cool. That's what would happen in real life.

Yup, cool. I used to mix for a lot of stark isolation. I still do sometimes, but mostly lately I've been going for more natural cohesive mixes. More like a band in a room than a band multitracking in a studio.

I have the album with the original on it - I loved their noisenikness, (though their original version isn't very noisy).
As a band they had a way with 60s style melodies too.
I really enjoyed the cover Greg - it has a Ramones/Spectorness about it that really appeals to me.
Fun, fast and more fun.
Cheers

Sounds great, Greg. I'll download this as a keeper!

What have you done with the vocal on that? They sound really good.

The only criticism I have is after the phasing flangers bit there's quite a piercing feedback in my right ear that fades out then comes back in. I like a bit of feedback, the feedback on the left side after the next chorus sounds better and fades out quicker.
