Time to find a way to build the 335 with Mutt Pups
Time to find a way to build the 335 with Mutt Pups
Why does it take me so long?
Yesterday is a typical day for me ... up at 8 .... drive wife to airport in Daytona ..... drive from there back Deland and head to the bank to do banking .... drive from there to 96 year old mom-in-law (Jackie) to take her to one Dr. appt. ..... take her home .... go pay bills ... go to store to pick up things .... drive by house to grab mail .... back to Jackie's to take her to Orange City for another Dr. appt. .... take her home .... go to house and load up truck ( no time for shower ) .... go to gig ..... set up/play/tear down ..... drive back to Jackie's to put her lymphedema boots on ..... go home, finally get a chance to eat for the first time that day .... take care of animals ..... crash around 2am.
That's why it takes me a while to do anything ...... most days are like that for me.
So I'm building this guitar:
http://www.guitarfetish.com/335-Set-Nec ... _4481.html
I'll use all their parts except the p'ups which will be those beautiful art d' objects Mutt built for me.
Muttley will prolly hate this but I'm gonna show you how precise you don't have to be.
The hope is that it will make building a guitar seem less intimidating and some of ya'll will build one too.
Should have some pics of the very first couple of steps up very soon .... maybe tonight.
Stay tuned

Yay! for kit-built guitars. That's how I got my tele a few years ago - http://www.sagamusic.com/products/produ ... item=TC-10
I upgraded the tuners ('cause the originals were trash) and the pickguard ('cause the original was ugly and stained...I actually bought the kit already opened from someone who never got around to putting the thing together). The bridge p/u is good, the neck is weak; I recently bought a hotter neck p/u from guitarfetish, but haven't installed it yet.
Good luck w/the mutt pups...hope they work out nicely and sound real good.

awesome youtube comment of the day
Lol it's still less satanic than whatever rituals Katie Perry and Taylor Swift do in their performances.

Okely Dokely
So the first stages ...... first, let's talk about the Mutt Pups ..... they're beautiful.
Seriously ...... I've held a lot of p'ups through the years but these are about the prettiest I've ever seen.
They are drop-dead gorgeous ..... jewel-like comes to mind .... the plating on the open top covers is deep and luxurious and on the P90, that top of maple takes it over the top.
I'm tellin' you all ....... these are worth having just on looks alone.

You may have noticed that the mounting rings are maple (AWESOME!! )
You may have also noticed the ring for the bridge pup came in the convenient 4-piece version which makes having a small prop to raise a pup for these picture quite easy!
For those who would stress about such a thing, don't forget ...... this thread is about NOT having to be precise.
A little Carpenters glue and it'll be strong as ever.
In fact those glues are stronger than the wood was ..... so it's an easy fix.

So the headstock is a big huge paddle ....... since I'm all about being casual I thought about leaving it but it's too ugly even for me.
So I'm gonna cut it down

I don't want anything that's even remotely precision so I simply grabbed a pencil and drew the new shape freehand.

Now you need a workbench to clamp the neck to to keep it stable while you cut it so I looked around where I was sitting ( a close bench is a good bench ) and lo- and behold, one was holding my junk mail

Also you need precision tools for such an important cut and there was one back in my garage ......
I will use a new blade and I bought a 'fine' blade under the concept that it would make fine cuts.

This is great Bob
Re: Time to find a way to build the 335 with Mutt Pups
Man you broke my pups already....
Seriously, I can send you another ring. I was a bit concerned about how to put them together because of the the weak cross grain if they were one piece. Seems like the glue up idea maybe just as fragile... Let me know, I can laminate a set that will NEVER come apart. If that break is along the existing glue line you may want to use an epoxy or acyl ate glue as normal wood glue needs one absorbent surface to set right. Its not under any stress so it should be good whatever you use. Just sayin'...
Other than that crack on. Really looking forward to seeing this come together.

I'll try gluing it first .... I'm not sure if it's on a glue line or not ...... I'll let you know if I can't fix it but I don't see it as a problem.
I was gonna cut the headstock this afternoon but I suddenly had a flash of light and a zillion floaters in my right eye which led me to a retina specialist after hours (emergency ) ...... I still made it to the gig only an hour late.
The gel in my eye detached from the retina ..... but no sign of retina detachment so it's a case of .... we'd better watch that!
They can't really do anything but they want to watch what they can't fix!
Oddly enough a regular at the place I played tonight and have been playing for 11 years turns out to be a retina specialist so HE wants to see me Monday.
A surfeit of retina specialists!
Anyways ...... I'll clamp that rascal to my wife's coffee table tomorrow and try to vacuum up the sawdust before she notices.

Look after them eyes Lt.. I speak from current experience. Not a good thing to have problems with.
Re: Time to find a way to build the 335 with Mutt Pups
Mutt, just reading though this and looking at the pictures - do you reckon a jigsaw would be a decent way of hacking a chunk out of the headstock of my PRS or should I just buy a coping saw? I was going to nip out and buy one later on. (I don't have access to a band saw)

Sorry mate been out at the footie all day, just got back.JD01 wrote: ↑Sat Dec 09, 2017 10:25 am Mutt, just reading though this and looking at the pictures - do you reckon a jigsaw would be a decent way of hacking a chunk out of the headstock of my PRS or should I just buy a coping saw? With either you have to go slow and let the blade do the work. A jig saw is an OK tool but for cutting an already finished headstock you are going to have to watch the finish breaking out as they are quite aggressive. Thats why I mentioned scribing through the finish into the wood. Its a hard call, I could do it with either but have a lot of years behind me with tools. If you dont mind taking some time over it cut a ways away from the line and file and sand it back just to be safe. Test on scrap if you can.
Re: Time to find a way to build the 335 with Mutt Pups
a coping saw would be easier ( I think ) for an inexperienced guy to do without damaging the finish.
My headstock is bare wood so even if I have a rough cut ( I won't but still ) I can sand it out to be ok.
If there was a finish there I wouldn't be able to sand it smooth without further damaging the finish.
Do you have a dremel tool?
That would cut thru the finish nicely or do as mutt said and simply scribe thru it.
