I don't know what lives under that big pickguard on the batwing version. I don't like that the pickups mount in the pickguard. But if it isn't all hogged out under there it probably doesn't matter. I like the look of both.
The newer "faded" ones tend to be pretty cheap new!Greg_L wrote: ↑Mon Jun 17, 2019 9:47 am I do prefer the smaller pickguard, but the batwing doesn't bother me. Maybe I'm subconsciously lowering my aesthetic standards. It doesn't seem like the top ones are hollowed out from the research I've done. From pics I've seen, it's just two humbucker sized routs with a small channel connecting them. It's not a big ol bathtub under there. That would be an absolute deal breaker.
After an entire weekend of scouring the internet, the small guard version is pretty much impossible to find in the price range I wanna pay. I'm not spending $5k for a Custom Shop SG or $2k+ for a vintage version.
Another option is to just buy a cheapo faded SG standard for like $800 and have my buddy Shawn paint it.
I don't want it that basic though. I still want the Standard neck - binding, trapezoid inlays, actual rosewood, etc. They made faded Standards a while back that had all the usual SG Standard shit, just with a gross rough faded finish.JD01 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 17, 2019 9:53 am

You might even get the faded versions from a few years ago cheaper than $800 - although I don't know what the conversion to dollars would be. When I was looking at faded Gibsons recently they were about 4-500 quid.
Yeah - the ones I was looking at were dot markers, no binding, open-pore rough finished... They were generally badly setup with rubbish fretwork too.Greg_L wrote: ↑Mon Jun 17, 2019 9:56 amI don't want it that basic though. Yeah I can do without all of that. Gibson necks are feast or famine. The necks with binding and inlays are always better than the raw/studio necks. And I don't mean personal preference. They are actually better, in addition to just being my personal preference.
That's what I'm thinking. The batwing doesn't bother me at all, I just prefer the small-guard visually.Minerman wrote: ↑Mon Jun 17, 2019 3:35 pm My SG is a 2016 Standard T batwing version, & I love mine...I have no idea if it's routed out under the big pickguard, but I'd doubt it...I kept the SG over the LP Studio I had because of the nibs/binding, nitro finish, & it sounded pretty much identical in a clip/recording...I let the LP go in order to fund the biggest part of the Chupacabra, & I don't regret that decision at all...That was my first "real" LP, & was special to me for a couple more reasons, but again, I don't regret the decision to let it go at all...
I personally think my SG is great...It's light as hell, feels great, has the sustain of a LP, has the shiny nitro finish and binding/nibs I wanted my LP to have, & most importantly, it sounds great IMO...
I can't tell you what to do because all this stuff is so personal dude, but if it were me, I'd try to find a white batwing version with the nibs/binding/neck you like, & call it a day...
That's pretty cool. That might be the best sounding Blackstar ever. I've never heard of that guy but it sure doesn't hurt the sound that he plays really good.Minerman wrote: ↑Mon Jun 17, 2019 4:00 pm BTW, I might have found my next cab...I've been wanting to switch to 2x12 cabs for years now, & I like how the speaker combination in this sounds...
The speakers in this cab are a G12T-75 in the top, & Celestion V-type in the bottom...Looks like the mic is on the T-75 to me...
Of course, I ain't payin' 4x12 price for a 2x12, or I'd already had a 2061 style cab a long time ago, along with one of the new slanted Marshall cabs...I'd just buy the "regular" version of this cab...
I already have a T-75 I got from Greg a few years ago, that was already broken in pretty good, & it's been literally pummeled in the ISO cab for quite a while now, so there's no doubt it's broken in really, really well...Just buy the $380 cab (or cheaper used), buy a V-Type, replace the speakers & call it a day...I could probably sell the 70/80 speakers for enough to cover the new V-Type speaker...

This little Blackstar sounds pretty good here, but it gets farty with the gain way up, but I'm not interested in the amp at all...The P90 does re-spark my interest though...
Yeah dude, I think it sounds pretty good too...I'd never heard of him either, but he definitely can play...
Sure, but you'll have the extra screw holes which may or may not matter...I think it'd drive me insane, but that's just me...
but that white one is BAD ASS!!Greg_L wrote: ↑Mon Jun 17, 2019 9:56 amI don't want it that basic though. Speaking of cheap guitars, my sister in law bought a new acoustic. It was a Cort. I always thought they were cheap looking and sounding but the one she got must have been a top of the line Cort, it was about 300CAD and played and sounded about as good as my Taylor. I would recommend it to anyone new starting out. It's quite the bang for the buck.
