NEW GEAR!! Buying anything?
Re: NEW GEAR!! Buying anything?
Cool. That makes sense if you're gonna have two rooms geared up for recording.
I thought for a minute you were gonna be using 16 preamps in one place and I was wondering what on earth you'd be using them for.

I am going to try even more mics on the drums. Tops, bottoms, two on the kick, hats, ride, etc. Maybe I can go to the next level. I don't know. I feel pretty good with what I get now, so at least there's that.

Gotta keep pushing yourself. that could be a pretty cool adventure. So how are you thinking of having the work for you? Like take a laptop up to the room with you?

Re: NEW GEAR!! Buying anything?
No, this rig I'm on right now is old, but it still works fine. I'm going to bring all of this upstairs and just leave it there for permanent drum recording. Laptop, two interfaces, headphone amp, all the mics and cables and shit. This stuff will stay upstairs with the drums.WhiskeyJack wrote: ↑Thu Jun 13, 2019 12:33 pm

The new computer and new interface will be down here in the mixing room for all the other stuff - guitars, vocals, mixing, whatever else.

That'll be cool. You've already got your baseline that you can go back to... or just add stuff to it.
Try and go full-on Steve Albini on it.
I really want to have a go at recording live drums... I was really close to starting it 6 or 9 months ago then we started with this fucking extension. (which is really nice to be fair).
Re: NEW GEAR!! Buying anything?
I don't know what going Steve Albini means, but I'm gonna do some stuff that I don't currently do in my current drum room. I really don't think I could be any happier with my drum sounds. They do come out just about exactly as I want them to. But that took a lot of work to get there. I just really know what to do and when to do it with my current set up. My process is dialed in. Not everyone likes my drums, but I do and that's all that matters. Going into a new, bigger room will have new challenges and quirks, but I'm pretty sure I can figure it out. The hardest parts are already done - they sound great and I play them well enough. That's 90% of drum recording right off the bat.JD01 wrote: ↑Thu Jun 13, 2019 1:29 pm

He's pretty well known for having awesome drum sounds.
Whenever I've read about him, heard him interviewed or people talk about him.
They always say that, in addition to the close mics, he uses a lot of room mics and that they're all over the place.
Re: NEW GEAR!! Buying anything?
Are you gonna do treatment in both rooms?
Re: NEW GEAR!! Buying anything?
Not much in the drum room unless I'm getting too much comb filtering. The high, irregular ceiling should work to my advantage. The mix room is already treated.

Re: NEW GEAR!! Buying anything?
Greg, do you have a dedicated recording kit you can just leave set-up all the time, or will you need to schlep your drums, cymbals and hardware up and down the steps for gigs?
Prolly doesn't bother you but I'm waaay too lazy for that!

I'm mega lazy - if I didn't have all my recording gear set up exactly how I wanted it all the time I'd get fuck all done.einstein magoo wrote: ↑Fri Jun 14, 2019 11:50 am Prolly doesn't bother you but I'm waaay too lazy for that!

My "recording kit" is also my "live kit". There's another kit I use for band practices set up at the practice space..einstein magoo wrote: ↑Fri Jun 14, 2019 11:50 am Greg, do you have a dedicated recording kit you can just leave set-up all the time, or will you need to schlep your drums, cymbals and hardware up and down the steps for gigs?

So yeah, I have to set up and tear down between gigs and recording. But since I never ever practice or even play for fun, my drums spend most of their time in cases until it's time to record something or play a gig.

Re: NEW GEAR!! Buying anything?
It takes me about 1.5 hours to go from drums in cases to fully set up, tuned up, and miked up for recording. So unless I'm really ready to record something, they stay in cases.
I bet I'd get really really good if I actually played them once in a while.

I just tried stereo room mics on drums for the first time yesterday. Even in my relatively small room, I really liked what it added. It lets the drums breathe a little. I crushed the crap out of them with the distressors and mixed them in pretty low. I'll be doing that again next time!

I don't use room mics often, but I know they can be great when used properly and appropriately.
