new wee song first post here
Re: new wee song first post here
It's a weird world.
As mentioned I tried to comment & suggest and one bloke went feral - abuse, slagging etc etc. He was rubbish but I was polite and constructive - his response was that he didn't want any suggestions or constructive commentary. Most of them don't - they like what they've done - the end.
I listen to a few people on there who write well enough.
Interestingly one person commented that they've not the patience or desire to work with real musicians anymore because they like the "perfect"versions that BIAB gives them.
You've seen what I've done with it - sketch a song structure once I've come up with a progression etc. The one think I LIKE about it, and consistently do, is insert a recorded progression/song into it to get a semi decent stereo drum track to build a song on. Construction paper Heart also used a BIAB solo but I had to go way out on a limb to get away from the cliched solos that are generally used. In the end I used a combo of two slide guitar phrases with LOTS of ping pong delay to lift it from a generic background slide line. I hope not to go to that again.

they just want a place to share their music ....... I can understand that.
Actually for the most part when I share something I've done I take suggestions as input for the next recording I may do but I very rarely go back and redo something ..... once I've done it I'm done.
HOWEVER, I would NEVER meltdown like beatledoofus nor would any comments upset me.
That's what they don't understand .... critical comments aren't critical of the person or their family or anything else ..... they're just observations ..... but sometimes people don't want any observations, true or not. I just unfortunately relearned that in another thread.
And as I said, I DO listen to comments with an eye to the next thing I do.
Meh ...... the loss of actual musicians and the glut of amateurs keep me working .... at my age, back in the day, I'd be unemployed.
Young, great players were everywhere and I'm not pretty anymore.
But now, even though lots of places no longer care about whether their musicians suck or not, there are enough that do to keep me busy.

Bob, have you recorded any shows properly from your mixer? I.e. taken a laptop an AI along and recorded the stereo out from your mixer? You could easily set up a camera too and then synch it up afterwards.Lt. Bob wrote: ↑Thu Jul 26, 2018 10:03 am they just want a place to share their music ....... I can understand that.

I've actually had a fiverr account sitting stagnant for a few weeks. I listed myself as a bassist for hire but haven't gotten any nibbles. (I need to list myself on upright for $5 cheaper than the other guy methinks!)
Bob, if you decide to go that route, we might want to talk shop and see what works

Re: new wee song first post here
oh yeah ...... I have hundreds and hundreds of hours of live recordings of me and bands from all the way back to 1970 or so when I first got a Teac 3340.
No laptop .... lol .... always a reel to reel 4 track or a cassette recorder and nowadays a multi channel HD recorder or a stereo digital like a DR-5.
I have right now three reel to reels and ... ummmm, maybe 6 digitals ... from 8 track Roland and 4 track Fostex to the DR 5
I actually really need to do a video for my website so I may be asking some questions about this ..... I know nothing of video.
I have some great recordings of me playing with some bad ass jazz players that are world class players .... or were. A couple of them are pretty dead..
hell, I used to carry a cassette recorder and record every single note I played.
I had tapes of me playing with SRV, Son Seals , White Trash ..... several dozen 'names'.
My house got hit and one of the things stolen was the case with all those tapes in it!

But I still have lots and lots of live stuff.

Cool, if you could get a video of a gig (with crappy camera audio) and the audio from a gig properly recorded from your mixer. Then someone here could easily work you through the steps to synch it up, mute the camera audio and get it on YouTube for you. Even I could do that! Tad or VHS would be a better bet though.

Yeah man, it really is just drag and drop if you are syncing up a video and audio. One of us could definitely help you with it if you wanna try it.JD01 wrote: ↑Thu Jul 26, 2018 12:25 pm Cool, if you could get a video of a gig (with crappy camera audio) and the audio from a gig properly recorded from your mixer. I'm not replying to this guy's song at all here, I just wanna tell all you other dudes that I've had my click to bleed into my tracks before...It baffled me for a long time, but I finally tracked it down & it was actually my guitar's pickups picking it up from my headphones...High gain ampsims & loud-ass headphones was the culprit...Tamed 'em down & it went away...And yes, my headphones were fuckin' cranking loud...
No wonder I'm deaf, right???
So without listening, there's possibly one fix for this guy, if he tracked his guitars that is...The other fix is to learn how to take a little criticism, but I ain't got no dogs in that race...

Re: new wee song first post here
My problem with BIAB is that all the songs seem to be just 1,2,3,4 chord progressions - and that's most of the problem with lots of music in lots of genres these days. Riffs, interesting musical passages, counter melodies, time changes, pace changes are what make music interesting. Meh to the lot of it.

Re: new wee song first post here
The most important part there is to get some easy sync point when you're recording. Start everything rolling, and put one of the mics next to the camera. Then clap your hands right in front of the camera so that you have a volume spike in the camera audio and your live audio.JD01 wrote: ↑Thu Jul 26, 2018 12:25 pm Cool, if you could get a video of a gig (with crappy camera audio) and the audio from a gig properly recorded from your mixer. Once you've done that, it's just a matter of finding a video editor that doesn't totally suck. (Hint: they all do, apparently)

I feel pretty good about where I'm at with recording and mixing music to my satisfaction.
Video though is a realm of witchcraft that I just can't crack.

If you are into that then you will love these guys. it meets every single one of your check boxes.Armistice wrote: ↑Thu Jul 26, 2018 10:39 pm My problem with BIAB is that all the songs seem to be just 1,2,3,4 chord progressions - and that's most of the problem with lots of music in lots of genres these days. LOL - Thanks, but I think they're fucking awful WJ! Ticks none of my boxes at all. They're just doing stuff because they can and doing lots of it all at once. It's barely music.WhiskeyJack wrote: ↑Fri Jul 27, 2018 12:58 pmIf you are into that then you will love these guys. it meets every single one of your check boxes.Armistice wrote: ↑Thu Jul 26, 2018 10:39 pm My problem with BIAB is that all the songs seem to be just 1,2,3,4 chord progressions - and that's most of the problem with lots of music in lots of genres these days. I like people who do the things I mentioned in the service of an actual song with an actual point ... like this tune - it gives up its joys slowly

Or this, down the heavier end of the musical spectrum:

I like how they're all acting winded during the breakdown.
"Gosh! These 10 second bursts of filming are really taking it out of me! I almost broke a sweat at one point!"

Steve Wilson is the darling of new Pysch light prog stuff. I'm not convinced yet but I don't mind his stuff.
Amplifier - nah, not much fussed.
I quite like that one VHS. The Fripp on Heroes tones are lovely.

I fully anticipated that answer haha! It was more of a "i know he's going to hate this" kind of post.
I like the two songs you posted .probably prefer the Amplifier - Interstellar track more so than the first one. it has a noteable droney doomy Rage against the machine feel to it. Meets alot my listening needs.

When i show that band to people they have it in their head that i am more impressed by the guitarists and that is the honestly the least impressive thing about that band. What impresses me about those dudes is the rhythm section. That band wouldn't have the wow factor i holds with me if they didn't have that drummer and bassist. I find the drummer to be consistent, tight and and he is locked in on a lot of the detail of the guitars. And the bass player is locked in on what the drummer is doing. The whole bottom end, rhythm and the over all percussiveness driving all their songs is what does it for me.
Effect drenched math rock guitarists are a dime a dozen. A rhythem section to back up those guys are less abundant.

Truth! Playing a ton of notes really fast and then turning on your pedal board isn't complex.WhiskeyJack wrote: ↑Sat Jul 28, 2018 1:43 pm Effect drenched math rock guitarists are a dime a dozen. A rhythem section to back up those guys are less abundant.
Keeping time with that guy and knowing exactly when to stop are!
