New amp project...One Watt JCM 800
Re: New amp project...One Watt JCM 800
Yeah age. I can rebuild a PC easily enough. I did all that as part of my unpaid work as tech manager/repair/gopher etc at the last school I worked at. From pulling/replacing cards, CPUs and fans to whole site networked software roll outs. Only because it had to be done & I was the only one foolhardy enough to give it a go. Mind you a PC box is a decent sized thing to screw around in & be able to see stuff.
I think "Meccano" sets were a better mechanical prep toy than Lego - I'm too old to have had Lego bricks as a toy. Mechanically I can do simple stuff like replace a head gasket on a 2stroke bike & then re-torque the head etc. but nothing modern.

Ever seen the price of the stuff now? You might also be too poor to take it on now. My wife and i wanted to have a little winter something to do together last winter and we were in the west edmonton mall while we were talking about it so we said let's go to the lego store. She wanted ot get the Home Alone diarama kinda kit. It was almost 400 dollars !!!!!!

And the star wars stuff was out of this world priced. They have a bunch of star wars helmets you could put together and display and those were pretty cool but also pretty big price tags.
We got two jigsaw puzzles from walmart for under 30 bucks.

I reckon there's a shrine in Lego headquarters in Denmark for whichever product development person first thought of theme kit lego. Had a bit of it as a kid but it was just bricks of different sizes and a few mechanical bits like tyres, axles and the likes. No-one back then was building the chick from Frozen out of lego. On the other hand, you could build whatever you want, rather than now where you seemingly have to build THAT thing, whatever it was. And, as you point out, so fucking expensive... That genius business move saved Lego from obscurity and bankruptcy, I reckon. It was just no big thing in times past. Just bricks.WhiskeyJack wrote: ↑Fri Oct 04, 2024 11:55 amEver seen the price of the stuff now? You might also be too poor to take it on now. I never played with legos. I liked going outside and building actual things like bike ramps and tree houses and stuff.
I did like Erector Sets though.

100%. Once you start paying to license anything things usually turn around.Armistice wrote: ↑Fri Oct 04, 2024 6:22 pmI reckon there's a shrine in Lego headquarters in Denmark for whichever product development person first thought of theme kit lego. Erector sets are from the Meccano Company. Seems Erector was used in the USA and Meccano in the rest of the world. Odd choice given the 1900 to 1970s was the era of euphemisms across those united states.
My wife was a stunningly good calligrapher until she was diagnosed and drugged. Initially her combo included Epillim...when on that she couldn't hold a cuppa without spilling it. She's way better on her current combo but can't do calligraphy anymore.

Thankfully, I can still play instruments, but yeah, it’s too bad. I would break a model ship set, I can’t really solder, either.rayc wrote: ↑Sat Oct 05, 2024 7:53 pm Erector sets are from the Meccano Company. Still making shit happen....
New face plate idea

Marshall-ish gold? And the little salvaged power switch.

Nah...let's make it sparkly.
Parts mounted up.

The ugly side. Gonna be a little cramped.

I made one mistake. I ordered standard .250" bushing length jacks. Normally that would be okay but this handmade aluminum faceplate is thicker than shitty stamped steel so I need loner bushing jacks. They should be here tomorrow and I can finalize and attach the faceplate.

That is pretty cool man. What did you make the new faceplate out of? Did you actually paint it?! Or just buy it as is and add the hole! How did you cut the square opening in the chassis for the power switch?!

Re: New amp project...One Watt JCM 800
A strip of flat aluminum. It's 1/8" thick, 2" wide, it started about 4 feet long but I've cut it down over time for various things. Common stuff found at home depot, lowe's, etc. I used the same stuff on the Tender Assman. Had some left over.WhiskeyJack wrote: ↑Sun Oct 06, 2024 12:34 pm That is pretty cool man. Yes I painted it. Again, I had paint left over from various projects. This gold basecoat and gold glitter paint was left over from the Dick Dale inspired Strat paint job I did. The silver on the top of the chassis is actual automotive urethane paint from a repair I did to the wife's car when I hit a pothole and fucked up her bumper against a curb lol.Did you actually paint it?! Or just buy it as is and add the hole!
I measured the switch and used round bits to rough out the hole to size. Then I squared the corners with files. I was a machinist in a former life. How did you cut the square opening in the chassis for the power switch?!

Re: New amp project...One Watt JCM 800
Anyone else spend the last 5 minutes trying to find the Thin Blue Line clip of Rowan Atkinson talking about "tightening his little nuts" as soon as it came up?
Re: New amp project...One Watt JCM 800
Excellent face plate. Have you named the thing they?
Deputy? Cooper S? Officer? Orificer? An image of a raised middle finger?

Fantastic. I figured you'd done the bit/ hole thing i was just really curious as to how you got the corners squared up. Makes perfect sense.Greg_L wrote: ↑Sun Oct 06, 2024 1:01 pmA strip of flat aluminum. It's 1/8" thick, 2" wide, it started about 4 feet long but I've cut it down over time for various things.
