Great vocal!
Thanks Armi! The snare sounds even more robotic on the original. I think mine is a happy medium between that and a more natural sound. This is also a rare instance of me just simply playing the snare on 2 and 4 and not throwing in all kinds of syncopation and ghost notes.
I know the song, but not to the extent of knowing the intimate details of the sounds being used - so if you're happy with it, all good. My "robotic" comment was more to do with the patch, than the playing... but you explained that elsewhere.

Awesome! Great job on capturing that Pixies vibe/dynamic..-. vocals are ACE man! I love the "heavy" guitar sound , if I were to nit , the kick sounds a little flubby and loud on the repeated heavy hits part, but not a mix breaker by any means....this rocks , loved it!

Thanks man! I've tweaked the mix, I guess I should post it. I didn't take the kick down in volume (it's actually incredibly loud in the original, mine is tamer than the Pixies), but I gave it more definition. Brought out more highs in it, sort of a click but not quite.

I posted the new mix in the original post. It's not drastically different, but I moved the snare to the right and the hi hat further to the left, shaped the kick with more attack, and turned the guitars up just a tad.

Huh. I don't think I've ever seen that particular panning choice.

Do you have any kind of full-room reverb on the whole drum kit?

I don't recall off the top of my head. I think I used the Reaper reverb plugin.

On the whole kit? If you're not already doing that, it might help glue things together (and make the drums sound a little more natural)

If it's there, it's on the whole kit. Just not positive I used it at all on the drums. I used less reverb and plugins in general on this recording than I usually do, and I used more Reaper plugins than I usually do (my usual reverb is UA EMT 140). I'll have to check when I get in the studio later.

So yeah, there was no reverb whatsoever added to the drums. I added it today with the EMT 140 (not much, but there's a definite difference), and I've tweaked some other things. I'm waiting until tomorrow to render it and post it, because my ears are worn out.

Great cover, man! I think that everything sounds good, except that the snare is dominating the mix. It could come down a few, even several dB. It's just way out there in front most of the time. The short wide room reverb on it should be plenty to help it stay in the mix if it's brought down in volume by a good margin.

I especially love the pumping drum bus on the "bam bam bam bam" bit with the kick and crash. Was that the compressor in SD3, or on your drum bus, or was it the master compressor/limiter doing that? Pumping can be a bad thing, but I think it sounds awesome here. It makes it sound loud and aggressive, and whatever compression settings you have do it right, and in a good way.
