The first thing I noticed was that it was pretty dry. And I really liked that.
The guitar sounds are really killer. Bass is perfect.
Love the drums - especially the super-dry snare.
Yeah it's over two minutes to get to the vocal. Probably a bit long for a pop song. I know you said the vocal is about as good as you can sing it. Maybe try once more on a different day. It's not bad, but I think I've heard you do better. Maybe on another day you can take it up a notch.
But overall it's super.
Lol MMM do I sound like a pop musician?
I might redo the vocal. I redid some other vocals for another song the other day. So much easier to make a good job of them once the song has sat in your brain for a week or two.
No you don't sound like a pop musician. I was thinking of pop more in the all-encompassing sense - "popular music". Sorry. Probably should have said rock.
OK - here's Mix 2 of this. I've not changed anything aside from the vocal mix.
In fact, I'll just render out the verses in later 'cos its quite a long song.

To me the vocal level is sitting right now. And it sounds good. Don't know if you want to try for a better take or not. The one you have is good. But if I had to guess, I think you could get something better if you wanted to.

Yeah - I've been thinking that myself... what normally happens is that I work out how I want to sing a song and spend ages on it. Work on the mix for ages and then realise that I can do much better when I've let the song fester in my head for a few weeks... I normally manage things in 2 or 3 takes then too.

I haven't kept up to this thread, but the vocals do sound better than the first mix. I hadn't really noticed anything that needed fixing but A/Bing back and forth there has been an improvement.
That drum build up at the end still sounds odd. Overly humanized bud, but if you are happy and content with it leave er be.

I actually resung the vocal on this today. And when I listened to it back the main thing I noticed was the drums at the end.

yes. It is likely one of those things that doesn't stick out to you right away and in the moment as you spend so much time listening to it and trying to edit it to near perfection, but when you come back to it later on it sticks out like a sore thumb.
It's only the thump thump thump drum build ups. that's it. every where's else your drums sound really good.

Here you go, Shan. I reckon this one is just about done now. I've redone the vocals and redone the drums at the end.
Weird thing - I noticed I was using the wrong reverb impulse on the vocal, no wonder I couldn't work out why it sounded weird!

Way gooder man! That feels far more natural!
this vocal mix is better than the last to my ears as as well. I have to ask though how did the reverb fix it? The previous mix the vocals sounded fatter and more saturated. these sound much more even and smooth. Which, I have heard is a byproduct of using reverb right but the whole sound of the vocal mix feels a little different. Did you change any of the compression or eq on it as well.

Regardless this is great mix man. Good stuff.
No, I also re-sang the cuntybollock!
Thing is, even after I re-sang it there was something weird up with the vocal and I couldn't work out what it was. So I checked on Reaverb and the wrong bloody impulse was loaded in. Was the next one alphabetically in the list. I actually had quite a weird reverb selected before.
I also made a few little re-verb/EQ tweeks nothing massively significant though.
So, I've been really busy lately and haven't had much time to check in here, but, I'm glad I took the time today because this is REALLY good! Vocals are so much clearer and I think your guitars are brilliant!
Soon as I get my project done, I'll be back into action (and, hopefully, check out Reaper!)

Thanks Alison. You'll like Reaper... if for no other reason that we'll be able to give you click by click guidance on what to do!
