The V2 is just a smaller version of the 100W one hey? Same circuits and stuff? they are mostly a clean style amp? Is there enough headroom on those to get some overdrive out if it with the help of some boost and overdrive pedals?
Exactly the same amp .... look identical .... it just has two fewer power tubes.
They are a clean amp .... you have to crank them stupid loud to get even a low gain distortion.
But they take pedals well and have the absolute best EQ set up of any amp ever .... you can get ANY EQ setting you can dream of all the way up to almost cocked wah sounds.
I wish I could graft that EQ onto all my amps.

Really an awesome amp TBH, which is why I also have a VT-40 which was a 4x10 combo of the V-2 amp AND a VT-22 which was the 2x12 combo version of the V-4 amp.
They weigh 95 and 105 lbs respectively.

Man I almost bought another JCM 800 yesterday. This one was a 50w - 2204. 1986. Pretty clean, sounded good but it needed maintenance. It was at a local amp builder's shop. He was asking $2200. Now this guy has forgotten more about amps than I'll ever know, but I do know those particular amps pretty well. I wanted to see if it had been hacked up or needed more serious repairs. He wouldn't open it up because he was having an open house type event and was too busy. Okay fine. I was ready to hand this dude some money but he refused. So be it. I won't be going back.

So now with the money that was gonna go to that amp I'm assembling a parts list to build my own. It will be the best of everything and still come in way under what he was asking.

Speaking of a best of everything amp... would it possible to Frankenstien a Fender clean channel and JCM800 overdrive into one amp?
Thinking a setup similar to my H&K where there's a tonestack and chanel volume for the clean and crunch channels.

Yes it's possible. Pretty much anything is possible. That would actually be pretty easy.

It would take a lot of tubes though, or fancy switching.

Just thinking, questions like this don't matter if you have load of amps and the space to keep a few of them ready to use. I need one amp that does everything!

The "problem" is how the amps do their thing. Part of the desired sound of each amp is unique to each amp. Combining them into one would require compromises that will make the amp pretty okay at both sounds, but not great at either.

Klonz amp kits did this and then tey sold the idea to Joyo who seemed to have made a decent version...

man ...... I have the same sickness as greg ..... mo' amps mo' amps mo' amps!!

I find myself kinda wanting that Joyo just cause ...... and it's freakin' stupid.
I have any kind of amp you could possibly want and I don't even use them anymore since I do a solo all the time.
And even if I did a band ( unlikely since I'm too lazy to go network and find one) I have great amps whether it's country or jazz or rock.
Literally the best of the best .....

But damned if I don't find myself lusting after more ...... more guitars, more pedals .... more fucking amps.
Just more shit for wifey to figure out what to do with once I'm gone.

I used to say I love music but now I realize it's more of an obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Haha, I completely understand. I'm the same way with recording gear. I've already got everything I could possibly need to record any musical project that comes to mind. But I'll be darned if I don't immediately get googly-eyed every time I see the next cool thing come along.

I try to think of it as more of a happiness thing, I guess (maybe that's just my defense mechanism to justify it :D). It makes me happy to play around with cool gear, and I haven't put myself into massive debt or financial hardship over it. And I don't really have any other big money sinks like kids or college or weddings to pay for. Just a money pit of a house that keeps falling apart in expensive ways. Other than that, I just splurge on fancy gear every year or so, even though it's totally unnecessary. If my wife outlives me, she's gonna have a bad time trying to figure out how to divest a way over-kitted home studio.

I've been "educating" mine on what I have, what it's worth, and who to talk to if I die unexpectedly so she knows how to get rid of everything.

I've had a dormant little inkling of an idea to build a JCM-style 2204 in the back of my head for a while now. Seeing and hearing one in the flesh a few days ago woke it up. Now I'm making a parts list.... I'm gonna do some splurging on this one. Mercury Transformers and stuff.

And I still have the Bassman to build.

ya' know .... that's different I think
You're building them so it's a creative process ...... you wouldn't see a painter quit painting because he had too many paintings.
This is absolutely an artform ........ and as you learn you'll build better ...... plus you can easily sell these things and start another.

I just buy shit ...... no art there ....

Having said that my financial advisor laughs when I question what I spend on gear.
She says it's basically nothing ..... people at my age with good finances usually spend it on jet skis and motorcycles and expensive cars at clips of tens of thousands of dollars at a time.
She says it's a relatively inexpensive hobby compared to most ..... like Tad buying recording gear ..... just doesn't cost that much as opposed to wanting a '69 Camaro

I'm basically at a point now where I can just build what I want instead of hunting and buying. And it's fun and rewarding. The amps I like already sound great. I'm not reinventing the wheel here. But I can make little tweaks to custom tailor them to my wants and needs.

^^^^^ this ^^^^^^^^^^

just like doing a great recording or painting a beautiful painting or getting that engine tuned to within an inch of its life or ending up with a nicely polished gold flake finish.

Yes! There doesn't have to be any sort of greater purpose.

Well I've pretty much sourced all the parts I'd need for a 2204 build. I have piles of tubes already, thank goodness.

And just like that it has begun. Began? Beginned? Anyway, chassis, faceplates, and an OT has been ordered.
