Snow At Midnight- bit cheesy

Post by stratmonkee »

Inspired by listening to a lot of Genesis 1st guitarist Anthony Phillips solo work , been recording some atmospheric maybe somewhat ambient type things using my nylon string classical guitar, and lots of my ehx mel9, C9, attack decay, and boss sy-1 pedals.
This one is somewhat redundant , more of a experiment in creating pads and backing for my classical guitar . All synths , "keyboard" , strings done with a lespaul thru the above pedals into pod go, acoustic guitar is a Takamine classical acoustic electric G series into pod...

Nice sounds...cool.
I experimented with my Mel9 yesterday...I put a compressor pedal AFTER it for a change...different tone, (my cheapie adds some high end), but a much more even result in levels. I usually use a comp before as it helps tracking but I've learnt to play TO the Mel9 a bit better so tried the swap. It seems to work, (yes, I added rolled off EQ, dender style amp pedal and lots of reverb).
Cheers

It's pretty. I don't think I have any notes on a first listen.

I love the sound of a nylon guitar on stuff that isn’t classical/flamenco. Can sound pretty close to a uke if playing higher up, too. I’ve actually had people ask me if I was playing a uke before.

Sounds great, strat!

The guitars sound terrific. All of them. Very lush. Keys stuff sounded nice too.

My only complaint is in the drum sound. That aggressive-ish snare sound and edgy high-hat don't fit the rest of the sounds. To my ear anyway.

Really, REALLY nice! The stuff I could totally meditate with. Sigh, I'll put this on replay. . .
If I knew what I was doing, I'd be dangerous!

Thanks Ray, I agree the mel 9 is a little finicky, I find playing with a pick vs fingerstyle can give really different results, I use a comp before at times , but for this one, no comp at all, will have to try it after. I really like this pedal a lot!

Thanks! When I first took up guitar many moons ago, I started with classical guitar , was tough because as a teen rock and roll guy , all I wanted to learn was Sabbath, Tull , Hendrix etc.. but I'm glad I did it , really opened my eyes to a different style and genre , which became a big part of my music listening repertoire.

Hey TripleM ,Thanks! No keys on this , used guitar for all synth sounds either with a mel 9 or a boss sy-1, they both do a pretty fair job emulating kybrd stuff I think. I agree on the drums, I'm really limited in that area when I record stuff...struggled finding the right loop set to vibe with this. I know a lot of guys use other drum programs that sound better , more flexible to actually create the drum track, need to look into that. Just starting up new band here in my home studio , and drummer has a kit here, we just doing covers but may approach him on laying down some tracks for me. Thanks for listening, appreciate the listen!

This sounds like the stuff my massage therapist puts on when i go in to have my back mangled.

Pretty cool man. Great display of what the pedals are capable of doing. I can't think of anything mix wise really. It's pretty straight ahead.
