All I Really Want To Do
So, I tried to overcome my writer’s block by singing melodies for hours at work, and I think I finally came up with something passable here! I like the concept of it. Just need to figure out the full execution.

I think you've got a good concept with this but it needs a bit more work to tidy it up.
You've got some quirky timing changes here there in this one that sound cool. But I know you've probably just free timed it and haven't really worked out what you're doing.
You, and probably everyone else on the forum, will probably hate this suggestion. But I reckon you should work out what the different time signatures are in this and map it out properly and record it to a metronome. Then when you add the harmony vocals on and stuff you'll be able to get them a bit tighter. This would sound good with a bass guitar too as it will drive along the odd timing changes.
Also, try and give the lead vocal a bit more welly - You've done better ones than this recently.

Re: All I Really Want To Do
Thanks, JD. I’ll be recording it to a metronome. Alison is kind enough to play some cello at the end of the song where you can hear me humming faintly. I’m stoked. I think that’ll make this song sound great. I’ll add bass and see if I like it. I’ll also do some little fills in the chorus with my classical.JD01 wrote: ↑Tue Oct 26, 2021 1:18 pm I think you've got a good concept with this but it needs a bit more work to tidy it up.

Not sure what to do with the vocals. I tried it with an earlier recording singing with a bit more power and I didn’t like it as much. It didn’t sound as intimate. But if others vote for going with more power, then ya gotta listen to the crowd.

Recorded to a metronome. Added bass, guitar, and piano. Sung with a little more strength.

Re: All I Really Want To Do
I always use a click track when I do my initial recordings, otherwise, things can get a bit messy especially when you start adding other instruments. Some argue against that as it doesn't seem natural but, if you want a steady, good recording, it really helps and, as I mentioned in our pm, it'll help me fit a cello line to your recording!
Really like the song! If you practice with a metronome, your timing will become much better!

Re: All I Really Want To Do
So coming in on the 2nd (?) mix then, I'm not really hearing any timing issues.
The stacked vocals sound cool.
Seems a decent song. Nothing really unexpected or exciting about it.

Yeah, second mix. I’ll be adding a few things here and there to spice it up, but it’s rather vanilla, ain’t it? LolvomitHatSteve wrote: ↑Wed Oct 27, 2021 12:38 pm So coming in on the 2nd (?) mix then, I'm not really hearing any timing issues.

Re: All I Really Want To Do
nice stuff coming together.
Re: All I Really Want To Do
I like how you added things one at a time. A nice touch.
Guitar sounds OK. A bit distant and maybe lacking a little low end.
Lead vocal is a little cloudy. Some excess energy in the 300hz-600hz octave I think. Harmonies and double tracking sounds great.

Thanks Triple! Nothing is EQd yet so this is good to know.

I like the sparsely used piano note...adds drama and space.
Your first couple of syllables could use some clarity but I like it.

Re: All I Really Want To Do
Really like this song @CrowsofFritz, the melody is strong and even a bit unpredictable. Gonna sound great with the cello.
I know I asked you about this before in your mic shoot out post, but I would really consider backing off of the mic some on vocals.
The plosives are really popping on some of your words, the first "twice" it is really strong. The "p" on simple and the "b" on back in the second verse.
Keep at this one, has real promise.

Sorry double post
Re: All I Really Want To Do
Just an addendum to my earlier comment. . . I really like this song and definitely can work with it as is, just need a BPM so the line I send will fit! Keep going with this, it will be worth it!

Okay, new mix is in the OP. This has Alison's AMAZING cello added. Really adds something to the song, I think.

Re: All I Really Want To Do
Yes the cello is ace.
I'd be inclined to pan the piano note opposite the cello as they eat each other currently.

Yes, cello is great, I like the vocal , especially around the 1:28 mark of the song. Nice song
