Just let Me Know - mastered.

Post by rayc »

Finished & mastered...

I've a couple of versions of this "song". It was something I started to try out the "user tracks" prepared by an occasional collaborator in BAIB land. Using a chord template a user can record themselves playing/singing their own ideas and then this can be loaded into BIAB and can be spat out as any chord progression required.
The chap had had someone pro play reggae chords and those are in the reggae version. Another user did a reggaeish single note guitar figure thing in the same way.
EVERYTHING is BIAB except for the melody & Vocals.
I lean towards the slightly Flaming Lips styled version which has just the single note figure "user tracks".

Thoughts on which would be better suited to follow through on?

Here are updates with partially retracked and tweaked vocals.

A little tidier...

Lyrics...
Just, just let me know
If you want me
In life it was and will not be
A game to play
Will you play fair or take your fee
Just, just let me know ow

Talking the talk
Wander and walk
We just orbit each other
& then we duck for cover
If you can't leave your phone
If you can't get in the zone
Take it from me
It's not meant to be
That's for free

Just, just let me know
if you want me
In life it was and will not be
A game to play
Will you speak it and set me free
Just, just let me know ow 6

Speaking the words
It seems absurd
We confuse each other
Can we both recover
If you won't come out to play
You won't find a way
Take it from me
It's not meant to be
That's for free

Just, just let me know
if you want me
In life it was and will not be
A game to play
To ensure their own victory
Just, just let me know ow

Just, just let me know
if you want me
It's like it was and will not be
its a game to play
Within your hands what will it be?
Just, just let me know ow..

The second one sounds cooler to my ears. The first one sounds too much high passed.

The Flaming Lips one is much more interesting. The reggae one has a lot more "we used the reggae presets" vibes.

@CrowsofFritz & @vomitHatSteve ,
I'm with you.
Def all presets in the reggae version...I've not spent much time with it as I'm waiting on a collaborator to sing it and, maybe , play bass before I do anything. The advantage in BIAB at this stage is that rearranging/restructuring or changing chords is easy. I ait until it's sorted before plugging in.
The 1st version was a little wilder the day before yesterday with that sweeping treated synth bass more IYF which I really liked but I asssume I'd be on my own in that so tweaked it.
THANKS GENTS.
Oh, Crows, whole thing high passed or vocals?

Flaming Lips version.... was listening to them on the way back home the other day, as it happens - so there are definite similarities there.

Make sure you do an appropriate video...

Thanks David,
I'll have to find the inflatables and a host of kawai animal suits.
I think the reason i decided to try something like them is the Opera House gig video: Coyne's voice isn't very strong and not particularly in tune..still a millions miles from me but encouraging.

Ah, I listened to it on my better headphones and the first mix sounds fine. That bass is DEEP. Couldn’t hear it on my crappy headphones.

I vote flaming lips on this one Ray. the reggae one is a bit too cookie cutter. 👍

I just listened to the last version so, I'm not sure I can vote on which version. I have to say, the one I listened to is SO unique!! Love all the effects and sounds you came up with. . . Reminds me that I need to experiment more and get out of my rut!!
Cool song loved listening!
If I knew what I was doing, I'd be dangerous!

@WhiskeyJack ,
Thanks - will do. The reggae is straight from the style template in BIAB with added guitars.
@Alison ,
Thanks.
To be fair all but the vocal come from BIAB. I've taken bits from different styles and done some blending - like mashing the pedal steel & a celtic string quartet together.
I wanted to see if I could break the BIAB mould of stereotypical/generic sounds...out of context some are almost cool. Mind you this may sound generic Flaming hands, (perhaps BIAB need to make that a style template).

I went to the last mix. Don't know which number, but it's the one called "A little tidier."

I like the vocal effects on this. Vocal is a little back in the mix tho.

Acoustic guitar on the right sounds nice.

Electronic stuff going on on the edges of the mix are a nice touch. They're a bit loud.

Drums and bass are a little back in the mix. The kick has a kind of wimpy sound. Snare is lacking a little crack.
