my favoritest collab ever
my favoritest collab ever
was the very first one I did back in 1999 right after I joined Home Recording.
A few of ya'll might remember Crawdad ..... we're still good friends and talk regularly but he just doesn't do forums or social media anymore.
Anyways he asked me if I could put horns on this song so I did and they're some of the best horns I've done .... the horn sections ( come in first at 50 seconds in ) just flow well. I think there's 4 horns but maybe 5 .... don't remember.
We didn't really have a mechanism for synching up our tracks as collabs weren't so common in 1999 and we were both reel to reelers at that time.
but we figured it out and ended up with this.
It doesn't hurt that I think these are great lyrics also ..... a great song and not because of my horns ..... it's just a great song period.
but I'm fairly proud of my horns ..... all horns and the sax solos are me and are real saxes except the bari which is my keyboard.

Yeah, it sounds great! I’m wondering how you were able to make the collab work.
“Naaaaaaaaaah man. I ain’t touching that mic. That thing’s expensive!”

Cool! Crawdad is a great guy. He's probably smart for avoiding social media. Nevertheless, I'd like it if he were here.
By coincidence, The Crappy Beatle contacted me just a couple of days ago. He sent me a message on SoundCloud. I haven't called him yet. But man I probably haven't heard from him in 10 years.

Oh yeah, what a great groove ! Horns are really good, fantastic playing.... guitar solo around 2:20, wow man great tone!! Real deal here! Really enjoyed , thanks for sharing!
Re: my favoritest collab ever
COOL song, cool horns - LOVE that 1st swell particularly.
The baritone keyboard blended well too.
This thing struts.
Fab vocals, fab lyrics a REALLY good mix.
The conversation between guitar & sax on the way out was really nice.
I've blathered enough I suppose.

Sounds pretty good.
He did the mix then?
Weird to hear a song about life passing by and getting older for the first time 20+ years after it was first written/recorded!

yeah .. he did.
If I'd mixed it the horns would be louder!

Yeah, did you mail the tapes or upload a file, record it to tape. Record your parts and then send the recorded tracks back or something?WhiskeyJack wrote: ↑Thu Sep 30, 2021 12:45 pm@Lt. Re: my favoritest collab ever
we put a sharp transient sound a bit before the music started on the rhythm tracks Al sent me.
Then I recorded that into my recorder and recorded my tracks.
Then I mailed him a CD so he got my tracks 2 at a time .... one right and one left.
If I did 5 horns I would have sent him 3 tracks ..... 2 would have a part panned hard to each side so you could separate them and one would only have one track
On all of those I would have that click at the beginning but nothing else of the rhythm track.
So each of my tracks would be loaded in and Al would use the click to synch them up .... if the click is in the right place then everything else that followed would be too.
For me that might mean dozens of pressing play and .... 'dammit .... too late again" ...
For AL ...... well, I'm not sure if he wasn't starting to use a puter some by then but the click at the beginning was the main thing.
We definitely sych'd things up by synching that very first click ..... we didn't have time codes or anything remotely like that.

Oh, how I love this! I can relate so much! "The years start taking their toll" damn, awesome tune! You are amazing!
If I knew what I was doing, I'd be dangerous!
