Good News

Post by Alison »

Which is what we all are craving right now!
Anyway, this is a relatively new song although I was playing it live with my loop pedal for a while.

Started recording it a while back and recently decided to finally finish it up. I'm thinking the bridge section might be coming on a bit too strong but I thought I'd get another opinion.
For what it's worth, here it is. . .

I might like the bridge section the best out of everything you've posted here.
More complex and more movement to it ..... liking that.

Your sound is getting reliably good .... very nice.
I'm assuming you're playing the violin on this?

Also, true story, my great, great Uncle Jim .... (met him when i was very young) was part of one of the founding families of Tularosa or the area right around it.
Got there on a wagon train when he was 6.
Have an old newspaper article where they interviewed some of the new arrivals including a 6 year old Jim.
I went there once around '68 ..... most hummingbirds I ever saw in my life.

Thank you! Thanks for listening. . .I owe any sound improvements to everyone here at recording rebels. You all have helped SO much! And, yes, I am playing everything except drums on this.

Wow! Family history is so awesome, isn't it? New Mexico is one of the last holdouts for modern "improvements" aka mass population (is New Mexico part of Mexico? :lollers2: ). . .sadly, we are losing our grip. You may not find quite so many hummingbirds now. . . when I first came back from Canada, I played in a band called "Tularosa", it was a country band. We were actually too progressive for the time (early 80's?) Those were the days, my friend. . .

Alison this sounds really really good! I think this is the best I have heard your vocals sit in a mix yet! really really detailed capture of your voice! Excellent tasteful use of reverb to suit the vibe of your song. What reverb are you using?

All the parts and pieces are playing nicely with each other, the cello in the bridge is a bit up front but it is kind of your things so if anything it just drives it home that that is your thing !! πŸ˜‰ may be a bit more compression possibly on it might smooth it out a bit more? Maybe? but this can work pretty well as is.

this was a really really good song and a great mix job too!!! Good work.

Thank you! All the Recording Rebels have made a HUGE difference in my recording and I really appreciate that!
My vocals have my usual room reverb (medium club) on them. I think the one thing that has made the biggest difference is using the iZotope Nectar 3 Elements on them, I love that plugin!

I don't have any compression on the cellos, might give that a try and see what happens! Thanks for listening and commenting, it's much appreciated!

This sounds pretty solid.

I might take the clangy percussion hit in the chorus down just a bit, but that's being nitpicky.

On headphones, I found the hard-panned violins and guitars to be a little busy. The 4 different parts were a little bit hard to get my head around, and when I took off one ear, it was a lot easier to follow what was going on.

It sounds really good to me too. Guitars sound real nice. Vocals sound great too.

I thought the bass was too heavy. I hear this as a rather lite song. So if it were me, I'd take a lot of low end out of the bass.

Then I'd shorten the decay time on the vocal reverb.

But that's it. I thought it was good.

Very good...vocal sits really well and is a good capture.
The only think that had me ta less than 100% was/is the slightly springy/boingy quality of the acoustic lines lines.
COOL.

Yeah it's a complete personal thing. I generally like to hear reverb decays end before the next "musical thing" starts. There were some spots where the decay hadn't finished before the next thing started. But that's just me. Reverb and I were never close.

Thanks! Actually, the guitars are just doubled but, I'll see if I can get more clarity in the cello lines. . .you're right about the cymbals, I'll bring them down and maybe see if I can get more ring to them instead of the "clang" :)
Thank you for listening!

I find it difficult to get a good, round bass sound when I use my electric cello for it, to me, it sounds a bit "thuddy". I'll definitely check out taking some low end off.
Never really paid attention to decay on reverb. . . I always learn something new with you guys! I'll pay more attention now. Thank you!

On the bass sound - it sounds like a lot of low end (60hz-120hz) and not enough low mid (400hz-600hz). If it were me, I'd reduce the former and maybe increase the latter. You could maybe do that with EQ, or retrack and address it with different source sounds.

On the reverb (and anything else, for that matter) do what *you* think sounds best. Maybe play around with decay time and decide you like it where it is. I just mentioned it as something you might want to try. But I'm just a chuckle-head on the internets.

Interesting. Maybe they just sounded like different parts to me because of how they interacted with the different cello parts?

Possibly although I may not have the cello lines in the right place in the mix. Different ears hear different things, that's why I love this group! I'll listen again with different ears :)

Alison - I'm a bit late on this but I think its a really tidy mix.
Only thing is that the cymbals that come in over the bridge sections are too loud - I don't think this is a just my opinion thing! They're just too loud!
Think your guitar playing is nice and tight on this, I like the hard-panned guitars, but then I hard pan all my rhythm guitars.

How did you capture them? They sound a bit piezoish to me, but fine in the mix.

Thank you! "piezoish"? Hmm, not too sure what you mean but. . . I had trouble recording the guitars on this. I used my ovation in stereo (mic and input) but it was distorting all over the place. Tried different cables on it. . . nothing worked. Finally, I recorded one guitar, mic'd, and one plugged in. That seemed to have gotten rid of the distortion. Not too sure why I got the distortion problem with recording stereo (and haven't had the problem since) but, this gave me 2 guitar parts to work with.

I've turned down the cymbals ;)
