Genre Confusion - Help Needed.
Genre Confusion - Help Needed.
Hello folks,
I'm genre confused as opposed to gender.
Side project folk came up with a song and used one fairly heavy guitar in the BIAB demo.
I added bass then threw on some guitar parts.
In the end I replaced everything but the drums, lead licks and vocals.
There's my usual bass with some distortion added.
A couple of hi gain guitar tracks, a "sitar" guitar part, a low drone, synthy guitar part and some banjo.
I haven't a clue if this is industrial lite or lite soy.
Please let me know what needs tweaking in terms of guitars particularly. Taking things to the logical extreme with distortion added to the lead guitar and stacked limiters - just for fun.

Re: Genre Confusion - Help Needed.
Well it kind of makes me want to kill myself after drinking a bunch of Absinthe and banging back a few grams of Opium or something so maybe like some early form of goth type of music?

Re: Genre Confusion - Help Needed.
I'm not a fan of the heavy fuzz guitar on the left but that's a style thing for me. I just don't like that sound. I understand it's an artistic tone choice so in that regard it works well in the mix. I love the bass, good job there. It all sounds pretty good to me except for the vocals.

Some kind of "stoner" or "desert" rock probably.
Who's doing the Peter Garrett impression?

I agree about the fuzzy one Greg, it fits the sound n song but isn't something I'd use for my own stuff.Greg_L wrote: ↑Mon Mar 01, 2021 10:28 am I'm not a fan of the heavy fuzz guitar on the left but that's a style thing for me. The bass took a while to get right...playing across those brief patches with no drums left me tempted to slow right down.
What don't you like about the vocal? The added distortion, chorus, delay? The fellow sings a lot but always buries himself in effects.

Robert is the singer in an occasional side project Spirit Level.vomitHatSteve wrote: ↑Mon Mar 01, 2021 11:40 am Some kind of "stoner" or "desert" rock probably.

I hadn't thought of Minister for the Environment Garrett!

Ha! Yes! I thought of Marilyn Manson when I listened to this!WhiskeyJack wrote: ↑Mon Mar 01, 2021 2:05 am Well it kind of makes me want to kill myself after drinking a bunch of Absinthe and banging back a few grams of Opium or something so maybe like some early form of goth type of music?
If I knew what I was doing, I'd be dangerous!

Thanks Alison, I think! I have a nephew who's an huge MM fan...I may have to ask him.Alison wrote: ↑Mon Mar 01, 2021 6:15 pmHa! Yes! Re: Genre Confusion - Help Needed.
Some of the guitar kind of a has a buzzy, nu-metal type tone, but that's about where the similarities to 90s industrial end. I'm getting more of a Queens of the Stone Age vibe (and lots of Breathe era midnight oil, of course)
Re: Genre Confusion - Help Needed.
Al that. Besides the annoyingly put-on vocal styling, it's so drowning in effects I can't even make any of it out.

@rayc it surely wasn't meant as an insult. Haven't listened to a lot of MM's music (didn't he do a cover of Sweet Dreams?), it's just the first thing that popped into my head. . . I roll like that sometimes
I've actually liked a couple of his songs.

If I knew what I was doing, I'd be dangerous!
Re: Genre Confusion - Help Needed.
Liking MM is now deeply problematic. Lucky I don't.
Re: Genre Confusion - Help Needed.
I didn't take it as an insult @Alison ...it's a point of reference...my nephew is a big fan of dark metallic music.

Re: Genre Confusion - Help Needed.
I had his vocal, except for the distorted part, just compressed with a little EQ tidying in a mix a few days ago but he didn't like it and asked for chorus and delay to be added...it's what he likes and uses. When he sent me the draft vocal it had a much longer delay on it. Robert's vocal style is mannered/personalized.
It certainly would drive Bubba nuts.

I get the QOTSA but had to look up the Midnight Oil stuff...I stopped listening to them after their 2nd album...I only like the 1st one. I can hear what you're talking about I think.vomitHatSteve wrote: ↑Mon Mar 01, 2021 6:48 pm Some of the guitar kind of a has a buzzy, nu-metal type tone, but that's about where the similarities to 90s industrial end. These chaps are inclined to alter the chord progressions part way through the process so i don't set up & mic an amp sound when doing their stuff. ALL the rhythm guitars and bass are Behringer pedal based, (GDI21 & BDI21), except the banjo, (Mic'd that), & sitar FX, (Yamaha FX500). I used Greg's cab impulses to remove A LOT of the fizz.

I'm a basic American and wore out copies of "Diesel and Dust" and "Blue Sky Mining" as a kid!rayc wrote: ↑Tue Mar 02, 2021 1:00 amI get the QOTSA but had to look up the Midnight Oil stuff...I stopped listening to them after their 2nd album...I only like the 1st one. Maybe it's the mood I'm in but the over-fuzzy guitars didn't bug me as much as I thought they would (based on reading the comments). Not a huge fan, but they weren't horrible either.
I think the vocal is pretty far back. And drenched in effects. So it's tough to hear.
And yeah that bass tone is super nice.
I wondered for a while if the guitar on the left was in tune or not. There were some weird notes early on in the song. But I think it was a performance thing and not a tuning thing. Maybe the guitarist wanted those flat notes.

Probably my most favorite band ever covering my second most favorite midnight oil song.vomitHatSteve wrote: ↑Tue Mar 02, 2021 7:03 pmI'm a basic American and wore out copies of "Diesel and Dust" and "Blue Sky Mining" as a kid!rayc wrote: ↑Tue Mar 02, 2021 1:00 am

Re: Genre Confusion - Help Needed.
Never even heard that one - so I went looking for the original but Garret's inability to hold a tune down low got to me...
Apparently they played a gig somewhere recently.

That is a good sounding song...it's a track where Oils recycled themselves...from chip frier to biofuel...WhiskeyJack wrote: ↑Tue Mar 02, 2021 10:55 pmProbably my most favorite band ever covering my second most favorite midnight oil song.vomitHatSteve wrote: ↑Tue Mar 02, 2021 7:03 pm I'm a basic American and wore out copies of "Diesel and Dust" and "Blue Sky Mining" as a kid!
This was when they were ace...they were still a north shore surf band and quite good at making a big noise in small venues:
