The Jongleurs Remix Project 5 - Mother

Post by Armistice »

Meanwhile, the project moves on. Hopefully this one will get everyone less exercised about the title... If not, then I. Didn't. Write. It. :like: I wish I had - it's an absolutely beautiful song.

We'd usually open with this one - if we got through it OK then it would be a good evening. Complex part from my point was singing harmonies that went above Richard's lead vocal for one lines, then below for the next, then both in the one line. Not the sort of thing I wanted to be doing first up. :eep: But the big ending definitely got people's attention.

As there are no drums, the remix was somewhat simpler. I did a lot of vocal tidying up, EQing, reining in of the bass, which was a bit "bloomy" in the original mix, volume adjustments of the electrics. As a side project Bubba is going to have a play with the acoustic guitars - I'm curious as to what someone who's got a great ear but not much experience with acoustics will do with them. Stay tuned.

So it's me L and R guitars, Richard middle guitar (the squeaky one - should have got a better take! :frown: TIme, as always the problem as I've mentioned before ), me on electrics and bass. Richard on lead vocal, me on all the harmonies.

The guitar sound beautiful. Vocal is good too. Great clarity.

Only two things I'd point out... The lead vocal is not quite out in front enough. Maybe lower the guitars a db or two. I notice this more in the first verse than anywhere else.

The other thing is I think the bass has a little too strong of a low end. I might suggest rolling some low end off.

But it sounds very very nice.

Thanks Trip...

Getting that bass level right has always been a challenge. There's a particularly resonant note on Richard's guitar that feeds into the same note on the bass that was problematic, so I've done a bit of work on both aspects, and pushed the vocals up a touch as well. Hopefully an improvement, :like:

Oh yeah. I like this one.

Like most of this project, the new mix is brighter. I think this is one where trying to get a little more of the warmth of the original might help.

Also, motherhood is a western imperialist construct to undermine large, traditional family and community structures in favor of the individualistic "nuclear family"... :D

This is really beautiful. . . production, vocals, harmonies, didn't hear anything I didn't like! If you ever want cello. . . :)
If I knew what I was doing, I'd be dangerous!

I'm writing a new song called The Gypsy Mothers.... :mad2:

OK - thanks, I'll side by side them and see what I've done. Probably just rolled back LPFs on acoustic guitars a bit, maybe the mastering EQ...

Thanks Alison i You've probably missed what I'm doing here but essentially remixing an entire previous album, track by track. Alas, I can't add any new elements, but I could see a cello working well ... :frown: I'd forgotten how much I liked this song until I fished it out of the vault and started work on it. :like:

Missed this one in amongst the other Jongleurs stuff.

This is a really nice song, Armi.
Richard is obviously a good singer, I think he could do with a touch more reverb here and there's a quite bright frequency which is right up front and a bit grating after a while. Set him back a bit and smooth that out.

Excellent song, Armi

I can't keep up to this.

Also i stopped listening when i realized it wasn't a cover of Danzigs 'Mother'. Was really hoping to hear Armi's take on that song. two thumbs down.

No for real. This is heaps better than the original and i given how long this has been floating around getting comments i don't have much else to offer up. I think you have your process pretty well dialed in buddy.

Honestly, I think Armi and Danzig have pretty similar vocal ranges and timbres, and Armi could do a pretty killer alternate take on the misfits.

I'd buy him some skip the dishes if he ever did that. I'll have to go through the old danzig library and see whats there. "Let it Be Captured" really comes to mind and it is sort of in a vein that Armi could take the raw foundation and run with it.

Listen to us Steve. Just a couple of producers sitting here watching the world burn.

Attention Armistice it's time to put that pain your are in to good use. Cover a sad Danzig song.

Took a couple of days but I finally got back to this. I'm liking the bass better on this one. I think you could nudge down the guitars just a bit more if you wanted to. But it's all just super-fine tuning at this point. It sounds really good.

Lovely.
The voice has some sibilant stuff and a hard edge in spots in the 1st verse.
Other wise lovely.
Cheers

Thanks rayc - I've tamed some of the sibilance a little, but for the sake of moving this along, I'm not putting another mix up.

When I get the entire project finished, I'll stick the finals up somewhere for whoever wants them.
