REM Style Song

Post by JD01 »

OK Dudes,

No vocal on this yet, I have this one and other one that I've not posted (although I might in a bit) that I'm given to my niece, Meg, to sing on. She's a much better singer than me and this sort of music is way more suited to her.

Was strumming my acoustic the other night, came up with the basic sequence and then added a bunch of clean electrics to it... maybe I've been listening to too much Armistice this week!

I dunno. You're not mumbling something incoherent about Georgia or Ohio, and you're actually hitting the drums unlike Joey Waronker. Is it really REM style? :D

Sounds like a pretty good start. I didn't follow your first paragraph clearly. So Meg is going to sing on this one?

Sounds cool James.

I get the REM vibe in the section with the descending electric guitar.

Definitely a little out of you box for sure.

It seeemed a little odd that those toms were centred..also the kick a little clicky but I really like the sound of progression. Nice stuff.

Man it doesn't so bad JD? It's quite nice. I find it a bit dry-ish. Like spatially dry. the drums mostly. the snare mostly. It's really dry and in my face.

Will be cool to see where this one goes. I can hear it having some subtle simple keys / piano sitting under some of it.

Ooo, it is isn't it. Listening back with this in mind, it sounds like the snare is hitting me on the bridge of the nose.
You're right though - I think the drums are a bit dry in general in this. I've started with my usual drum template but all of the guitars are much wetter than I'd normally go and I've not adjusted the reverb on the drums, just hte EQ.

Yeah - I've sent it to Meg to think up a good vocal melody and come up with a hook. So I'll adjust all that when I add the vocal in. That snare is gonna be right where the singer should be.

I was dead pleased with the sound of the acoustics on this too.

Sounds good so far JD - just need to get some overwrought vocals in there and you're done...

Cheers Armi... I'll see what she comes back with and then I'll say "Meg, you're making way too much sense. We need a metaphor about tree frogs to tell this story"

Not yet. The only thing to do at this stage is make the drums a bit wetter. Be a while before the vocal gets done on this.
