We didn't have coal, but we had Leyland Motors as it was called then, BTR Rubber, and the Centurian Tank Works, all as direct neighbours. Very depressing. I loved how the guitars and bass work together, but wasn't keen on the tone of the solo. It sounds too mellow and too far away to me, maybe too much reverb, but that's just me. Great song!
Thanks Ceebee, I'll have a think about that solo tone. I think I was intending it to be kind of a reflective pause in the narrative.

Sorry Bob, I started to listen to this last night and comment, but sleep got the better of me. I fell asleep with my laptop on my chest and my good headphones on my head, with your song playing. So here's my second attempt.

It sounds great, everything crisp and clear. The reverb has kind of an 80's vibe to me. I like it. It does seem like maybe the bass is a bit much compared to the guitars. The tone and playing are great, just seems like it could be slightly lower in the mix, and/or the guitars could be louder. And the headphones I'm listening on, while they are high quality, tend to be weak on bass. I'm curious to see what it sounds like on my monitors.

All in all, a great song and recording.

Thanks, Paulman - yes, the whole track is meant to be that 80s kind of guitar pop. I thought I'd been quite reserved with the reverb - at least for me! Maybe it's the short slapback on the vocal that gives that feel.

I agree about the bass, you know. It IS a bit loud and not playing too nicely with the others. I dropped it a dB or two and shelved off a little of the low end. I also took a tiny bit off the low end of the overheads.

I like the tweaked mix best, the solo fits in great to my ears.
Cheers
