Little Fires Everywhere - a song that's topical for about a week longer
One of my other favorite songs from this years RPM/FAWM is about a book that just got adapted into a miniseries that ends in a week
I'm using a very similar recording/mixing strategy to I Am Legend, but a more conventional drum sound for this one.
Lemme know what needs fixing
Mix 1 Unmastered

Cool song, dig the little "whoo-oo" backing vocals, nice touch! My only mix comment is its a little heavy to one side.

Another cool arrangement.
Seems to be left leaning again, but maybe you said that was to some degree intentional? Did I read that or imagine it?
Holy shit! Your voice starting at 2:09! Is that just you hitting those notes, or...? That is actually kind of extraordinary.
Love the ending.

Yeah, the guitar leaning left is intentional. I'm hoping the rest of the mix balances it out tho.
Yeah, the vox are just me with some compression and verb. My range is just shy of 4 octaves, so I really could octave jump more than I do. I just forget to write songs that way.
Thanks!

This is probably my most favorite song you have ever done. The mix could be hot garbage and i would still like it. Lucky for you it is a good mix. I want to say it is a bit more textured than your other mixes?! Are you trying new different stuff? maybe i missed that entirely in your other thread?
Also do i hear a goat in there somewherre?

Sounds good! I have to ask the same as Whiskey, though. Are there a bunch of small samples of random sounds sprinkled around the song? Or am I just hearing things lol
“Naaaaaaaaaah man. I ain’t touching that mic. That thing’s expensive!”

Great song, Steve. Incredible vocal performance.
No real comments other than the drums might be a bit too dry - maybe a hint of verb, particularly on that snare sound might make it a bit bigger.

Thanks folks.
Yes, there are lots of random samples sprinkled around. I think there may be a goat or sheep, yes; the random samples are mostly pulled from the sound library of a popular action RPG from the 90s.
I think the regular drums are the EZD "claustrophobic" kit, which is a pretty dry kit.

I like the song.
Yeah it's leaning left. There is a crunch guitar over there that doesn't have anything on the right to balance it out.
But the first thing that struck me was boomy low end. Both the bass and kick have a ton of low end. The bass has a tendency to cover the kick.
Love the big reverb on the "whooo hoooo" vocals. Lead vocal sounds excellent.

SOUNDS good but there's a problem withy plural agreement in the lyric's 1st verse, (there's lots as opposed to there're lots). I doubt many people will care but it does stick out for me.
The left lean works for me as it becomes balanced at different points in the arrangement.

There is an s on "moms", but it's very quiet and basically gets completely buried by a hat. * shrug *. I grew up listening to the Smashing Pumpkins, so I'm ok with folks not hearing my lyrics correctly!
Re: Little Fires Everywhere - a song that's topical for about a week longer
The low end is pretty overpowering. The bass is rumbling resonance and the kick has a lot of floof. Yeah, floof. It sounds floofy. I think if you can get some attack in the kick it'd balance out and sound big and you could get away with it. The bass guitar does need some taming though.

I'm listening to this whole album on my normal speaker system now, and it's surreal.
The bgvox are largely very far back; the lead vox are super far-forword; the low end is super boomy.
That said, I might be pretty close to ok with it. Maybe I'll dial back the low bass in the mastering chain over the next week while I wait for the james gameboy remix of one of the songs.

Great song! Love the backing ooo weee oo vocals :>). Honestly, I like the way this sounded thru my system, maybe a little more energy from the drums if that makes sense? But that possibly would kill the vibe of the song ....your vocals are great!
