Hello Rebels! An acoustic/vocal track for evaluation
Hi fellas
I don't know if you noticed, but I've been off the recording hobby for a while. Don't know why really, except that it just isn't happening for me these days since my Loin Fruit Frank flew the nest!
Anyway, the missis asked me if we could do this song as it's a favourite of hers from way back. The track features two 12-string acoustics played by me, a six-string played by Armistice and vocals by Manda. This is a headphone mix, but I will check it out on the monitors if you guys pick up on any horrors.
Cheers

Ha, back for my third attempt at a comment...the internet has dropped out twice in 10 minutes...
A, yes, 12 on Left, 12 on Right and 6 on leaning about 30% Left? That's how I hear - my ears suggest boosting the Right 12 somewhat to balance.
Manda's voice work really well and the 2nd vocals work REALLLLLY well in the blend.
Good steady, urgent/insistent strum propels things well.
COOL.

I've only had a chance to listen to this on the downstairs stereo and I reckon it sounded really good. The blend of the acoustics is particularly good.
The vocal is also well recorded and mixed in well. Works particularly well double tracked.
Is that all one take?

I like it Bubba.
The guitars are blended really well.
The whole thing just kinda floats right along.

Thanks JD.No, it's a comped vocal track, as the phrasing doesn't leaves much space for Manda to take a breath. It's particularly noticeable on the last couplet because they overlap a bit.JD01 wrote: ↑Thu Apr 23, 2020 9:24 am I've only had a chance to listen to this on the downstairs stereo and I reckon it sounded really good. Yes, you picked out the acoustic tracks spot on.

Thanks for your positive comments.

Thanks, musicturtle. I'm not usually into the recording and mixing of acoustics so I'm pleased this seems to stand up.musicturtle wrote: ↑Thu Apr 23, 2020 9:41 am I like it Bubba.

like it ..... never heard the song before I don't think.
love how 12-strings fill in .....
Sounds purty good to me although the vox sounds like it's in a different room than the gits ... different verb maybe?
Nevertheless a big thumbs up!!

Something... something about the vocal isn't sitting right for me (on cans). Not sure what it is tho. It feels buried, but all the lyrics are coming through clearly. Maybe it's too much 'verb?
The different vocal parts are sitting well with each other, and the guitars are sitting well with each other too.

Thanks, Steve. I think I know what it is. When I first tracked the vocal I pulled out some 2.5-3kHz because it was sounding a little uncomfortable and raspy there. Since I worked out the processing properly (specifically the compression) the need for the hi mid cut has gone. I just put some back in and it seems to have addressed the buriedness that you mention. I'll leave it an hour or two then listen again. If it still sounds ok I'll replace the upload.vomitHatSteve wrote: ↑Thu Apr 23, 2020 11:47 am Something... something about the vocal isn't sitting right for me (on cans). Not sure what it is tho. Bubba I got nothing man. Gave it a spin on my cans and monitors and the nits i picked up aren't even worth mentioning. I think this is a homerun. Take your bases.

Re: Hello Rebels! An acoustic/vocal track for evaluation
Sounds good Bubba. Nice pic of the three of us you've got there...

Re: Hello Rebels! An acoustic/vocal track for evaluation
Pretty song. Well performed.
I would gone for a more intimate sound. There is a lot of reverb on things. And it's a big reverb. It sounds distantly mic'd in an empty concert hall.
I think the mix could probably be a little bit wider? You might be able to pan the guitars a little harder? Not sure, but it seems like it.

Hey Bubba - Good to hear some of your material again.
Much as I love reverb, I think I agree with MMM on this one...seems like it could be just a little less wet and still have an adequate sense of space. I thought the panning was fine though. Guitars sound nice. Well done.
