Odd Times

Post by liv_rong »

Wrote this recently, actually had a little video on the instagram with me messing around with the drums a week or so ago.

It switches time signatures, I dont know what time is because I dont know things in life. But Dross says it switches from 5/4 and 7/4. I think the last half(which he hasnt heard) is all 4/4 though. But, I dont know shit.

This is the 2nd day in a row of completing a song from start to finish! Though I think I may re-track the bass, or just comp it to tighten it up since I suck at bass lol.

This is my favorite song of writing as of late.

I like it! I can barely count to 4 when I play, so I'm always impressed with counting to 5 or 7 in your head. This sounds smooth and comfortable.

Everything sounds balanced to me, if not just a tiny bit dark. But my ears are fried, because I spent the afternoon trying to dial in a 5.1 system in my living room. It's a pretty bad set of speakers, so all I can hear for the rest of the day is boxy cardboard sounds in my head. This doesn't sound like that, that's about all I can say :)

Well done!

Thanks for including a Dropbox link so mobile users can listen!

Sounds good! Sounded like 5/4 to me in the first half.

Firstly - this sounds great.
Guitars sound great - guitars sound good, cymbals in particular sound excellent.
Few really comments on the levels and stuff - think you have every thing just about right there.
Only things really is I like the snare sound, its dry and crunchy without any real boing to it. But, i'm not really sure how to describe this - it sounds short and clippy, like the attack on it is really aggressive without any sustain - this is particularly evident right at the end when you hit the snare hard a lot. This is only really evident on the hard hits, not the little ghost notes so much.

Great tune though, mate. Yeah, it is in 5/4, then goes to 7/4

Oh you could possibly add a bit more weight to the kick - just try and make it sound a bit heavier.

Check your compressors? Around 3:23, the volume suddenly ducks in the middle of a build.

It'll probably be that you have your compressors set up too aggressively. So that when you start playing loud it clamps down too much.

FIFY. Us non apple mobile users have no problems.

FYI, i have looked into this and it isn't a PHPBB problem it is an issue with the exentsion that hasn't had any support in the last bunch of years. I should try to find another more stable means of doing this.

Sorry Apple users, but also not sorry, shame on you for drinking the Jobs kool aid.

I’ll have you know my tablet is the coolest thing ever! I’ve done so many cool things with it, including recording my songs! I’d be lost without it. Lol

Also this liv_rong I heard this too. All kinds of weird shit going on. Guitars jumping out and all around compressor mayhem.

HaHa!!! I am sure it is. Again i apologize for the lack of functionality on our end and the even bigger lack of trying to get it sorted. Hopefully during this apocalypse i'll make time to get it sorted, but sadly i am finding wokring from home they keep me busier and then also trying to help the wife wiht her projects she chooses to bite off make me more busy around her than before. I can't really seem to catch a break even when the wolrd is ending LOL :lollers2: :lollers2: :lollers2: :spacepalm:

WhiskeyJack thanks!

Also, I will mess around with the compressor a bit. I dont feel like automating, mainly because I dont know how! I do have some ideas though on how to make it work.

Also worth mentioning, I only have a compressors on the overheads.

EDIT: oh, and the snare and bass lol. The guitars are all raw tracks, no eq, comp or any effects or plugins.

I really dont know anything about compressors, I use Blockfish for my snare and that is an easy interface to understand. I just use stock presets for my overheads and bass tracks then adjust volume. The only thing I change is the make up gain.

Here is a screen of one of my overheads:

So you just throw a compressor on a track, select a preset and call it day? you don't make nay adjustments other than the make up gain check box?

Right, except I'll play with the volume level of the track, of course.

Interesting. Good to know. that's pretty cool Liv. Your drums always sound really good regardless. Very interesting. Another reason why all reapers stock plugs and presets are the cats pajamas. . :like: :like: :like:

I dont use a buss, I just plop a plug on each track. But I'll try out that preset.

I do things the not right way, but I guess I am getting ok results :facepalm2:
