Old song cover of song...a cover
Old song cover of song...a cover
I've been wanting to do this for a while, finally got around to doing it. Rough tracked guitars last week and practiced drums a few times until I decided to record them. I tracked the drums, guitars and bass all this afternoon. I am going to have my buddy who knows how to play bass re-track that lol.
The "old nathaniel" is my remake of this song we used to play in like 2003 or 2004 which is also attached called "OG track 13". It is my hope to get the same bass player to track on this remake since he is still a friend and lives in town. The guitar player, however, is in California and to my knowledge doesnt play much electric anymore.
My remade version:

Re: Old song cover of song...a cover
I love hearing redos of old stuff. This is awesome Liv. A huge difference. Both sonically and in the performance. I really dig this.
I'd kind of like to hear the bass up a bit but if you are going to retrack it don't sweat it. The guitars have a nice little bite to them and a really good dirty sound but not a whole lot in the bottom end of them.
Do you remember how you recorded the OG version? Was it all live off the floor kind of thing?

Thanks dude! I've kind of learned to turn back the low end on my amp and let the bass do its thing, but this bass track sucked anyways. This is four guitar tracks all with different pedal or amp options.WhiskeyJack wrote: ↑Mon Dec 30, 2019 7:56 pm I love hearing redos of old stuff. This is awesome Liv. A huge difference. Also no anything on those, just raw tracks panned, Ill post the tracks in the tone thread.

The original was interesting. A time of PC recording on soundcards. This particular one had 4 inputs only. This recording was 1 mic on the guitar cab, I believe a DI from the bass amp and the drums were the other two inputs BUT the drums had four mics. How did this work you ask? Two overheads, snare and kick mic all plugged into a mixer and the main outs of the mixer to the soundcard.

I like looking back on how i used to do things which were very similar to how you did yours only difference being that i used like a all in one workstation instead of a computer, and how far things have come to improve on stuff.

I used to record drums like that too. It was tough. I think it shined up my miking and tuning techniques though so going to more inputs got me good results fast.liv_rong wrote: ↑Mon Dec 30, 2019 8:14 pm

Huge improvement from old to new. Great job.

Man the difference is night and day even through my laptop speakers. Will give a better listen later but it is cool to see progress like this when the same tune is put side by side.
Re: Old song cover of song...a cover
The difference between the two made me smile. The new one is so much better.
The guitars sound great.
Only two thins I really noticed... During (what I think are) the verses, the kick is really busy. It kind of muddies up the verses. Then in the chorus, the cymbals get a little swirly/phasey.
Other than that it sounds terrific.

Both are cool. Is it me or is the sound of the snare pretty different on the new one?
Cheers

Liv, I'm just listening to the remade version.
The drum performance on this sounds, great. Can tell you've practisced this plenty.
Looking forward to hearing this with the bass re-done as it sounds a bit absent at the moment.
Snare is a bit donky, but you've got another thread about that.
Only other thing is right before the end, the drum pattern is really cool, but the fast (is it a double kick) stuff gets a bit woofy.

Yeah at the end the hits are a little lighter so I used the volume envelope to turn it up to match the rest but it’s a little too high. When I play those faster things I don’t hit as hard due to my lack of skill and technique lol. It is a single pedal though.JD01 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 15, 2020 5:24 am Liv, I'm just listening to the remade version.
