You're missing a string but you can get by!

Re: NEW GEAR!! Buying anything?
As an old bassist I'm pleased you bought a four.
What's the go with PJ and Jazz neck?
OK, looked it up it's a Precision with a Jazz neck.
For decades I though all Jazz basses were fretless.
The only thing missing for me would be the ashtray and PU Cover chrome stuff.
That critter starts at AUS$1700 downunder

Re: NEW GEAR!! Buying anything?
That looks really nice, Greg. I have a plain Jazz so don't have the P pickup. The Jazz neck is great though.
Re: NEW GEAR!! Buying anything?
Lol. If Jaco Pastrorius and John Entwistle only need four strings, then I really only need one or two.

It's the perfect marriage of the two best basses ever made. The P sounds awesome, the J plays awesome, so it's a great mashup. Mosrites are way out of the range that I'm comfortable spending on a stupid bass, so this is pretty much just right for me.rayc wrote: ↑Wed Jan 09, 2019 4:59 am As an old bassist I'm pleased you bought a four.

The neck and J pickup are what sold me on it. I'm not a Jazz bass guy, but I like the way they play. I like the narrower nut compared to a P Bass but the sound of a P Bass is unbeatable. I'm not 100% thrilled with the J pickup on it's own, but the P pickup sounds killer and blended they sound cool. I'll need to fine tune the blend a little but I'll figure it out.

Re: NEW GEAR!! Buying anything?
Ideally I'd have also gone for a P/J pickup configuration for a slightly fatter sound with the Jazz neck. I tried millions of them though and the Jazz I eventually bought played really well so I didn't want to risk buying a P/J off the net untried. I was only getting a Squire not a Fender of course.Greg_L wrote: ↑Wed Jan 09, 2019 8:17 am The neck and J pickup are what sold me on it. I'm not a Jazz bass guy, but I like the way they play. The neck is great though - my bass playing just immediately improved as soon as I got it, purely 'cos I was able to play what I wanted to which just wasn't possible on my previously cheapo chinese bass.
Re: NEW GEAR!! Buying anything?
I've been playing the same P Bass for 20 years, so the move to a J neck is a nice change. I play bass like it's a guitar anyway so the J neck works well. And this one has a "high mass bridge" which means nothing to me but bass dorks seem to think it matters. Whatever.JD01 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 09, 2019 8:25 am

I really don't care that much, but I love the way mine looks. Lol. Dee Dee body with a Geddy Lee neck. A Dee Dee Lee!

Re: NEW GEAR!! Buying anything?
Yeah. I like the way mine looks too. It's similar to yours but with a black body and white block inlays.
You gonna pop up some tones from that soon?

Nice bass. Thats kind of all I would want too...
Re: NEW GEAR!! Buying anything?
Yeah maybe, I guess. It's just bass. Lol. I like my new bass but I'm not ever gonna be "bass guy".

My two-chord song is totally done but I'm gonna redo the bass with this new one today.
Have you done any bass pickups yet? I'm not even sure what to go for with a J Bass pickup. I've never had one. I can listen to a guitar pickup and tell what I like or don't like about it, but bass pickups? Whatever works.

I do know that traditional J pickups are potentially noisy being single coils and all. I wouldn't want that. The one that came in this bass is noiseless, but it's a little weak compared to the P pickup. Naturally it picks up closer to the bridge so the string energy is diminished in that area. I know that much. But I don't know if hotter is better for a good blend. I do know that I should play with the heights to get them balanced more. That might be all it needs.

Re: NEW GEAR!! Buying anything?
Yeh, Ive done bass pups... Sounds like you'd be best off with a split coil J Bass pup. They are noise canceling and still keep the single coil punch and drive. The Dimarzio version is pretty much standard among most of the punk and loud bass players I know that use J Bass... I could do a better one I'm sure as they are mass produced and I have heard a lot of variation in Dimarzio's pups of the same type. More so than nearly any other main brand.
Check out reviews of the Model J pup they do and get back to me.

Re: NEW GEAR!! Buying anything?
The Dimarzio's are the go to punk version but for comparison the Area J's are good as are the Fralin version. There are others and they are not a hard pickup to make just a little hard to nail done with an existing partner in the neck position. So if you do go for one it may be worth replacing the set after time...
Re: NEW GEAR!! Buying anything?
I'm gonna put a few miles on it first. I'm not thinking too hard about pickup swaps yet. I'm gonna jam it through the SVT and 8x10 at the practice room...which might not be fair because that is the most badass bass rig ever and makes anything sound good.muttley wrote: ↑Wed Jan 09, 2019 9:32 am The Dimarzio's are the go to punk version but for comparison the Area J's are good as are the Fralin version. Re: NEW GEAR!! Buying anything?
Thats what I would do. But if you are serious about the noise cancelling then a split J bass is an easy swap and an easy pup to make. When you are ready I will lay out the pro's and cons.Greg_L wrote: ↑Wed Jan 09, 2019 9:40 amI'm gonna put a few miles on it first. I'm not thinking too hard about pickup swaps yet. Once again nice bass.
Re: NEW GEAR!! Buying anything?
I have some new old stock bass p'ups.
Both sets are jazz though.
A set of Bartolinis and a set of early diMarzio half pounders.
Anyone want them?
