All These Years - remember the other day when I was asking about double-tracking tips?

Post by SweetDan »

(I could hear you all saying, "That SweetDan guy never posts anything...")

I posted a few over at that otHeR place, but other than a few tone snippets (edit: and one other tune), I haven't posted anything much here yet. And though I'm not totally satisfied with the double tracking (and I could sure use some suggestions on how to make the drums on this more interesting), I think this one is far enough along it could benefit from a listen by other ears. So, here goes.

(And don't worry that you hear neither the drums nor the doubled, grinding guitars at first; as the song is humorous in nature, it changes character *significantly* about a minute in.)

Bill and Ted time traveled and brought a bass player from 1973, a drummer from 1984 and a guitar player from 1995. Now they're spreading peace all over the world 🌎

LOL - this is awesome! I was just starting to get bored with this when it changed pace.

Your distorted rhythm guitar is a bit loud - its really dominating this - seems really upfront.
Try reducing the volume a little and adding a touch of reverb to them.

The vibrato on the vocal in the 1st section is perfect Burl Ives/other old men who made a crust doing that stuff on TV.
Yeah rhythm gtrs are too loud.
Spring reverb for the surf drum links?
I think the DTracking works well.
Fun stuff.

Guitar tone sounds good.

Drums could probably be a bit louder.
My biggest nit is probably how buried the vocals keep getting. Especially if you're doing a humorous thing, clarity is key.

Just listening on my ear buds at work right now SD, and i think your Guits are swallowing up your drums. They are definitely sitting in behind them once things pick up a bit of steam. Again, only on earbuds here. I really like that clean guitar tone right at the beginning. It makes a listener feel warm and at home before you kick er into high gear. I will give a better listen later tonight or tomorrow on my monitors.

I really like the tune too. Very clever. You and vomitHatSteve have some sonic similarities in your vocal performances. I would like to hear a duet of you two some day.

New mix: dropped the distorted rhythm guitars about 2db, extended the guitar solo to the end, added bus F/X (via sends to a new channel w/just EQ and reverb).

Your vocal vibrato - is it natural, forced or electronically generated?
I like the new mix - fun stuff.
All I can think of at present is the need for some bottom end in the bass & kick.

Thanks; I'd been wondering about that bit.

It's not a plugin nor an effect. As mentioned elsewhere, I'm not a singer, but in the true spirit of DIY that is home recording, I just do it myself anyway. So what you hear probably started out life being forced, and by now it's a (bad?) habit when I open my mouth to sing, so...natural?

(Kind of like a kid, while learning some sport, develops a technique for kicking the ball or holding the racket that works for them at the time, but in fact hinders their further development.)

Similar changes to this tune as were made in an update I just posted for "(They're) Gone So fast":

The new mix is pretty well sorted.
I like it - it's cool.
There are several stylistic similarities with VHS's music.
