The Fascist Tangerine

Post by JD01 »

This was something I was fucking about with recently and did the vocal for on Friday - I didn't write the lyrics, they're from a Limerick I heard on YouTube but I thought they were quite funny

Loool!!!! Good one.

Just listening on my phone currently so my observations may be unjust ill haveto check again later from monitors but off the cuff those octave type sustaimed notes sound much more upfront than they need to be.

Much better than the mix you emailed me, Jdude! Vocal stil too quiet. I'm thinking the lead guitar could use some ambience on it. I'm getting that D.I. tone, whether it's D.I.d or not. :coolstorybro:

This is cool, very cool.

This is the same one you posted recently, just instrumentally, right? I still hear something weird going on. I thought it was the drums, but now I'm not so sure. It sounds like someone is turning a volume knob back and forth on something. Like I said, I originally thought it was the drums, but it might be the bass or something else. It's like a slow pump, but it's too slow to be a compressor (I think).

Also, if you can, try to get more "Wire" sound on the snare. It almost sounds like a snare with the wires flipped off.

I do think the guitars and general mix sound fantastic. Just those few liitle things bugging me.

Fuck. I'm trying to put my finger on it. I just listened again and I think it IS the drums after all. Are you really varying the snare velocities a lot? You might be over doing it. I'm trying to zero in on it and I now think it's the snare that sounds like its' volume is fluctuating too much. Not 100% sure, but I'm almost convinced it's the snare. I think that's why I made the comment about it sounding like the drummer keeps dropping his sticks when you first posted it.

Cheers guys. I'll have a listen about those drums again in the week and see what I can do. I'd like to spend a little time on this one to really nail it.

Rami, it is the one I posted up the instrumental from before.

Bubba, there's nothing DI. But it's an extra level of gain from the SD1 on all of the lead guitars. They could probably do with a touch more verb too.

It's only the lead tone I'm quibbling about, the rest of the guitars sound really good. :coolstorybro:

Sounds good JD01. I think the drums seem a little busy or something in the middle of the stereo image but apart from that it's cool. The vocals give it a Hawkwind feel.

Cheers, Ray.

I only know one hawkwind song and that was sung by Lemmy!

Yeah young, I'm 60 this year!
I didn't spend much time chasing the closest track - a few of their live excursions are a closer match but you get the picture.
Maybe you should turn the flanger and space echo to max and do a space rock track next! It's a cool song you've done though.

Here's the very slightly updated version, lead guitars sitting back a little further and the drums adjusted slightly.

Sounds great.

I hate to dwell on this, but those drums are still going in and out. Take a look/listen to your drums. Your snare velocities are fluctuating and it doesn't sound natural. This is the type of beat that probably doesn't need any humanizing. Those snares should all be pretty much the same volume. It sounds like you've tried too hard to make them sound "human" and they don't. Sorry man. I know I keep talking about this, and I seem to be the only one that hears it, so maybe its just me. But those snares are not right.

It's too fast for me to know for sure, but it sounds like your 1st and 4th snare hits are ok, but the 2nd and 3rd hits are lower in volume. Something like that.

Just for the sake of an expirement, try taking all velocity variations off the snare. I'm almost 100% sure it will sound better.

The tune sounds great besides that to me.

Ok, will take another look tomorrow. I can hear what you mean but I can't quite place it. I've shut my laptop down now.
