Into The Storm - it all comes full circle

Post by SweetDan »

Cryptic post title, eh? Let me explain.

About a year ago (has it really been that long?), I posted this - viewtopic.php?f=20&t=682 . It was the first time I'd sung and recorded one of my tunes where I thought "That singing's not half-bad..." That brief respite from apprehension, plus the fact that the lyrics and arrangement for the tune came together pretty quickly, gave me the confidence to commit (to myself, at least) to organize, write, record, mix, and *finish* (without half-assing) a collection of songs that could be called an album or an EP.

This tune - "Into The Storm" - started it all. Thinking I'd be clever, I waited to post it for feedback until I was near the end of my to-do list. The list keeps growing...I keep adding notes of things I need to tweak on each of the songs, some of those thanks to all your feedback here, and some I've figured out on my own.

So, this is not a final mix, nor do I have "final" mixes on the other 4 tunes I've recently posted, but I'm closer to that elusive finish line, and now you have the complete picture of what this EP will contain*. It has been (and will continue to be) a pleasure to have a few minutes of your time and your feedback as I've tried to make these recordings release-worthy. If you could spare a few minutes more, here's one more song for your listening and critiquing pleasure:

* Here's the track listing I've chosen for the EP:

1. (They're) Gone So Fast
2. Goodbye, Fireflies
3. All These Years
4. Short Season
5. Into The Storm

There are few Esses & SH type of things I'd like to minimize if 'twere mine but I'm sensitive to those things I think.
I'd also like a wider stereo image of the drums.
Cool song and good performances generally.
I like the outro solo heaps.

Like the guitar tone immediately on the intro.
After "coming of this storm" it sounds a bit weak - needs something to lift the song into the next section there, just a bit more of an aggressive strum and drum fill will do it.
The open hi-hat quarter notes in the chorus sound a bit ropey - can you change this to 8th notes on the ride? I reckon it'll sound better.
As the song goes on I'm starting to find the rhythm guitars a bit dark and dull sounding, a bit more variation in the tone and playing side to side would be good. I do like the outro solo.

Agree with Ray - wider drums would be good.

I think the vocal is pretty good - you just need more confidence in your delivery.
Stand up when you're doing a take and sing as if you're actually trying to sing with a live band - you sound a bit like you're trying not to be heard by other people in the house.

You're a better singer than me, you certainly have better pitch control, but listen to my last track I posted. That was sung really fucking loud. You don't have to be that aggressive, but just more forthright. This track sounds a bit Counting Crows style, and think about how he sings something like Mr Jones, clearly not singing at conversational volume - that was probably well loud if you were in the room with him.

Sounds clean and clear in general.

I can see what JD is saying about it being a little dark. You have an acoustic in there, right? Maybe bring that a little farther forward.

I wouldn't mind hearing the kick and snare coming through a lot more.

Thanks, everybody. I've got some listening, re-listening, reading, re-reading, and thinking to do about this and the others for the EP.

EDIT: and the obvious re-mixing...

Better singing on this tune. Good harmonies on chorus. Maybe try some doubling on your vocals to fatten them up a bit.

I would like to hear bigger drums as well.

This is best song yet as far I am concerned.

In terms of an A/B of the previous thread / attempts you have progressed light years SD.

To me and my ears the biggest thing i would like to hear to really round this all out is i would like the drums spread out a bit more and given a bit more space around everything else. It feels like the guitars and vocals are all glued together with TLC and then just simply laid on top of the drums.

I have given it another listen and i think the drums in and of themselves are mixed nicely together they just need to get spaced out and a hint of atmosphere. They may pull themselves together in doing that.

That solo at 3:30 onward is pretty cool man. I dig that shit big time. Thats a classic play out with out overkill or bravado. It 100% works for the song.
