"Entropic Sausage" - 25 seconds of garage punk
Over this weekend, I got together with my old drummer from college and recorded a low-fi punk album.
2 dynamic mics + 1 DI channel into a stereo wav.
One guitar/bass, Snare, hi-hat (no kick)
No click. no multi-tracking. Everything all at once in an untreated garage.
The DAW is command-line linux with the sample rate set to 41000, because I can't type good.
Obviously, we're going to be pretty limited in what we can do in the mix phase, but I want to get this as coherent-sounding as possible before release.
So here's my first pass at one of the song. I've also attached the raw, version in case anyone has any ideas for how to clean it up from there. Thanks!

Re: "Entropic Sausage" - 25 seconds of garage punk
I'm only listening at work on ear buds. And my honest opinion is just tame the high end of the raw track so that the listeners ears aren't fatiguing, and a bit of verb and creative delay to get the drums to spread it out to the left side a little and maybe a little shared verb on the vox and bass and call it a day?
raw has way way more garage flavor than the "1" mix. you stuff is always quirky fun and garagey in an 8 bit kind nerd rock (sorry don't kill me just lack of better terms) kind of way, i say break the norm of mixing and keep it like the way you have it. if someone is listening on ear phones/ buds it'll be a total experience and if someone is listening on their mobile device speaker no ones going to care what is right and left it will mono mix itself to their ears.
Just my thoughts VHS.

8-bit is only technically wrong for most of my stuff.
This is 32-bit floating point apparently. (I forgot to set that field, but it looks like that's the default.)
I'm worried that there's already a lot of room noise, and adding 'verb or delay will exacerbate that?
I dunno, here's another mix trying that:

Re: "Entropic Sausage" - 25 seconds of garage punk
lol. my apologies for the bit madness.
i am on earbuds only again still at the office. that comes together nicely actually. the taming of the high end might have been too much it seems to be wearing a blanket now. That could also be the verbs too?
in any case for lo-fi gargey stuff i think ultimately whatever is going ot make you happy is what works best for the mix.
Opinion only, mix 2 is better than mix 1.

LOL - you're insane. Can't really give you any really guidance on the mix other than to say that Mix 1 sounds better than Mix 2 I think Mix 2 is too dark in comparison.
Its got a good vibe though and is fun,.

I like the raw one myself, but if you want people to actually listen to it, use mix 1.

Thanks, guys.
I can't guarantee that I actually *want* people to listen to it. If they do, that's nice, but TBH, this is not intended to be an accessible project!

So - can you give us the lyrics 'cos the bits I can catch are pretty funny
Re: "Entropic Sausage" - 25 seconds of garage punk
I can dig that, but if that's the case, then just leave it raw.vomitHatSteve wrote: ↑Wed Nov 08, 2017 12:20 pm Thanks, guys.

"I'm a stupid sack of chemicals and resent that every day
Full of hungers and desires I wish would go away.
An entropic sausage that is destined to decay
But still thinks that it's special"
Plus the lyrics of "Jesus Loves Me".

Is that a children's show from your parts?

Re: "Entropic Sausage" - 25 seconds of garage punk
Raw is MUCH clearer and therefor gets my vote.
Cheers

Re: "Entropic Sausage" - 25 seconds of garage punk
Still getting feedback trickling in from the other forum, so I made this mix.
I think I like the mono thing, so I'll probably stick with that tack.

That's much clearer - I could pick out what was going on and pick out the lyrics better in that. I still think you're a weirdo though.

The name of the song alone makes you look twice. As if to say, yup I read that right the first time. Any chance of full three minute version or is this just a one time thing..?vomitHatSteve wrote: ↑Mon Nov 13, 2017 12:19 pm Still getting feedback trickling in from the other forum, so I made this mix.

Re: "Entropic Sausage" - 25 seconds of garage punk
Fair enough.
That's as long as this one is. When I release the rest of the project, there will be some 2 minute songs on there (probably a total of 15 minutes for the "album")Any chance for a 3 minute version
