They're like that. I bought an acoustic thinking I'd have a use for it, but it's never made it to a recording. Probably won't. And it's very hard to play.

Cheers Tad. Yeah Yamaha have done some good over the years in the way of decent instruments at affordable prices. I had an Electro Acoustic back in the 90s which was a great guitar to play and learn on. This old beast has one hell of a sound.

They are great but not for everyone.

Holy shit! I just saw the prices. That's some dedication to recording but I bet they are amazing.

Holy fuck-bollocks, Tad. You just spent about $5000 on mics!

In my entire life I don't think I've even spent one full minute in total on a 12 string guitar. I like the way they sound when other people play them. I've just never ever had a need for one.

Played only electric till went in the army. At AIT (training) in Augusta, Georgia went into town and bought an Aria 12 String. Brand new about 119 bucks or something, really cheap. Dreadnaught body. Played like a dream and sounded great. Traded for a Technics turntable and a tapestry when leaving Germany to have something to play through my Sansui Stereo setup, and something to hang on the wall. Back to electric only for a few years, then bought another cheapo 12 string, a Kay this time. Similar cheap-ass price. Another keeper. My two cheap plywood top guitars played and sounded great!
Later ended up with a really beautiful Guild FJ30-12 with a super wide, baseball bat neck. Hard as fuck to play. Had a paid-for setup done, and have tweaked myself over and over and just can't get happy with it. It IS lovely to look at though.
Still have the Guild and a buddy was getting rid of a nice black Takamine 12 String acoustic with cutaway, and I'm a sucker so I bought it from him. Turns out to be another slug. Top is warped a bit, gotta really look to see the warpage, but it's just enough to make it fairly useless. Great electronics in the Tak, and great looks on the Guild, but the cheapo 12 strings always played and sounded great, no matter how much I beat them up.
My Yamaha 6 string (FJ-645A) bought in '92 for about 500 bones is still my go to for acoustic. Yamaha makes some really good stuff. (also cheap Kays and Arias from the 70s).

Nice! 12s are great instruments for sure. I had my first, a Fender Acoustic back in the 90s when I was learning to play and it wasn't really the right time for me to have one. Really not an instrument to learn on, at all. That was part chopped for an amp long ago.

I've always had access to a friends Rickenbacker 12 over the years but I've wanted to get an acoustic 12 just for recording for some time.

Yeah I can see you not needing one. They don't generally lend themselves to Punk Rock and power chords but I'm pretty sure you could make it work. :coolstorybro:

I think once my season slows and I go back to sitting in with friends I'm gonna go one time with only the OPL 12 and use it for everything ..... distorted rock and all ..... should be interesting

Finally got me a Gretsch.

This thing is an Electromatic Tri-Five. As far as I know these were made for maybe one or two years and they're just part of the basic Electromatic lineup with some added visual coolness and a slightly thinner body. I've played them before in stores and liked them but they don't come with cases, not even a gig bag, and that's a huge turnoff for me. I use my shit live. I need a case. I found this one on Reverb for a really good price and it has a case! So I got it.

I was pleasantly surprised by the fit and finish of this guitar. I've seen some Electromatics as damn near unplayable, but this one being pre-owned but nearly mint must have had all the bugs fixed already. Good setup right out of the box. I LOVE the paint. Vintage style creamy white top and back, gold sides and neck. Binding everywhere. So cool. Another white guitar for the collection. Tuning stability was terrible though with the Bigsby. The nut is a nice fake bone/Tusq type thing, so not a cheapo plastic nut. I cleaned up the slots a little and put a roller tune-o-matic on it and now it returns back to tune perfectly after some Bigsby wiggling. Pretty cool, I'm happy with it. Now I finally have a big hollowbody.

Nice score! Does it have the classic Gretsch foil-type pickups? Those definitely have a cool sound of their own.

Thanks fellas.

@Tadpui It has Filtertrons in it. I'm not aware of any Gretsch guitars having actual gold foils, but I'm no historian or anything. To the best of my knowledge Gold Foils were more often found in similar hollowbodies like Kays and Harmonys and Silvertones and stuff like that. I believe the classic Gretsches always had Dearmonds or Filtertrons. But really, fuck if I know. This one has Filtertrons and they're okay. I might one day put some TV Jones in it. I really like the cosmetics of the pearloid tops on these pickups though and they sound okay to me so they'll probably stay.

It's a pinned bridge. Looks like a floater but it really isn't.
