Another one
Another one
This one's based on Drums On Demand multitracks.
A slightly jerky chorus with a smooth verse and an even smoother spot for a solo.
No lyrics though I have a melody of sorts...not in this mix. This has the melody, sadly via a keyboard flute:
I dumped the DOD drums and dropped in a stereo file of BIAB drums...seems to sit better. I also bumped up a little 800Hz on the bass.
Here's a tweak to the melody subsequent to Shan's observations.
UPDATED...
I've worked out a melody and some lyrics...only V1 & C1 with this version.
The melody seems too adventurous for me...I've "tuned" it to try to learn it. It also seems to be part lead and part bvox counter melody all thrown together...
Here's a further update...I've worked on the phrasing and pitch but now need to either find a singer or learn to sing it & track it phrase by phrase.
I've sorted the verses & now need to get the choruses in order...

Re: Another one
Cool! This makes me want to get my flute chops back! Still have my old flute but, it needs fixing. . .sigh. Beginning to really catch on to your style. This sounds great to my ear. Any lyrics? Or will it be instrumental?
If I knew what I was doing, I'd be dangerous!
Re: Another one
I like the clean/chimy guitar sounds. I like the way they're "not quite doubled" on each side. That's a real cool effect.
The kick and bass are pretty muddy and indistinct.
The snare sounds OK, but a little flappy in spots. High hat sounds great. There is one crash cymbal that sounds crystal clear and another crash that sounds a little dull/far away.

Thanks @TripleM , I've replaced the drums and tweaked the bass. I didn't hear anything muffled on my gear but cleaned things a little as mentioned in the OP.TripleM wrote: ↑Thu Jan 27, 2022 9:59 pm I like the clean/chimy guitar sounds. Re: Another one
Thanks @Alison ,
every flautist I know says the same thing. Seems it's an easy instrument to neglect but an unforgiving one.
A former recording writing collaborator of mine, reaching back to the 80s, let both his sax & flute languish and is now anguished at the cost of getting them both up to working spec.
I have the scan for a lyric but no words as yet. I still need to trim the melody to make it mouth friendly anyway.

Re: Another one
Coming in on the latest mix (miamama010222bbdrum.mp3)
I like the idea of the flue in your jam ray but it is kind of doing that weird unorganic jazz note dropping that i find to be a tell tale artifact of your band in a box stuff. See 0:50 1:06ish for an example of what i am talking about it. It's like it just trying on notes like pairs of socks to see which one it likes. Just doesn't flow or feel like it has any life at all. I can't remember which one of your other songs had this happen in it but you were able to clean it up and fix it somehow? Maybe the ska song? or maybe an earlier one that may have had a horn or an organ in it.
Also the flutes could pop a bit more too somehow. not sure if you could any verb or delay onto it to get it out from under the drums and stuff but that could be cool and helpful;?!

Re: Another one
nice .... listening to the last mix ..... liking it ..... obviously gonna grow as vocals make the mix but man, it's really nice where it is!
Great and interesting arrangement ....... gonna be cool.
I actually can't wait to hear as it progresses ..... doesn't sound like there's much left to do to the basic track.

Re: Another one
@WhiskeyJack , thanks Shan. yes there're a few notes that seem at odds. This may be, partially, due to me choosing to substitute chords that are a note left or right of the "permitted" chords in Amaj and also some machine error that's probably a case of the code giving the thing an option to stray. Most noticeable there's a part, repeated later, where the chord changes from A to G# where the machine opts to stay on E rather than dip to Eb...it goes E E E E rather than E Eb E Eb and, to be generous, this may be as result of Eb sounding quite weak in that context. I tweaked that section and had to raise the level of Eb by 3+ dB to get it to sound like it belonged. I checked the rest and they're all chordal tones or passing tones in the key. If you could point out any other weird ones I'll track them down. man, you should've heard it before I chopped and hacked my way through it...sounded like a burbling coffee maker.
@Lt. Bob , thank you. I've yet to write a set of lyrics and even then to get a voice to do them. This one has been a very instructive process for me as I try to write simple guitar lines based on the chords. They still sound like transposed bass lines but I'm getting beyond the root at least.

Re: Another one
Like the BIAB drums much better then the DOD, especially the snare! Dig the flute idea! Would be cool to have a real flute. The mix sounds good so far, I guess if I were to nit, (listening on headphones) bass guitar seems a little low , I hear some cool lines being played , just seems to be buried a bit . This is a nice canvas to work with, vocals will add a lot to this, look forward to hear what you do.
Re: Another one
I also liked the BIAB drums better than DoD. They sound nicer, and the programming on the DoD drums was pretty mechanical.
The rhythm guitars have a wee bit too much upper-mid bite. I might notch out a bit around 2400hz.
Bass sounds nice, although I think I liked it better without the 800hz boost. It's more defined.

Oddly enough the DOD stuff is actually played and recorded rather than programmed.
I'll look at the bass bump & rhythm gits.

Re: Another one
I like the continued 60's psychedelia vibe. I say crank those vocals up, so what if they're a bit off here and there. They sound really muffled as well. Bandi sounds fine on drums, the drum mix is good. Bass sounds good, and I love the guitar tone. Clean but not too clean.
Re: Another one
This one sounds pretty tidy to me, Ray - I'm coming straight in on the last mix, possibly bring the bass up a tiny bit
